HASH(0x9677bae0) out of 5 stars excellent 26 Jan. 2016
By Jon Miller ('Kirk') - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Brahms concerto here matches his Boston Symphony performance with Christoph von Dohnanyi on 2006. It is
technically flawless and tonally attractive, It also is interpretively substantive with reasonable tempi. Wolgang Sawallisch is
a notable Brahmsian who has recorded two Brahms symphony cycles, a recent set for EMI and an a set ca. 1960 with the
Vienna Symphony/Philips. I find his earlier set a bit more exciting // Karl Bohm's Brahms symphonies #s 1 and 2/DG in 1958
and 1959 c.f the 1970 set. . In the concerto, Sawallisch and Zimmerman form a convincing team-nothing drags and there is great clarity.
The Mozart concerto is equally good with an especially hypnotic second movement.

selected peers: Brahms: Grumiaux/ Van Beinum/Philips; Kogan/Kondrashin/EMI; Menuhin/Kempe/EMI; Oistrakh/Klemperer/EMI and Konwitschny/DG
Mozart: Grumiaux/Davis/Philips; Schneiderhan/BPO/DG; Oistrakh/EMI
