Astrid - Boy for You

Amazon.co.uk

Recounting tales of love lost and found, amidst moments of soul searching and self discovery, singer/songwriter Astrid delivers an assured and confident debut that moves comfortably within (but not beyond) the well-tested realms of guitar-folk and pop-rock. Achieving a balanced mix of gentle piano and string ballads like "Someone" and "Say What You Mean" combined with slightly more upbeat songs, like "Sing For Me" and the heavier, guitar laden "If I Loved You", Astrid manages to keep things moving--but only just. With an organic and sensual vocal style, Astrid does convey a real sense of pain, suffering and emotion through her writing, but when this egocentric approach is applied over 10 songs, it tends to cut a bit thin, becoming inwardly lost in its own sentimentality. Although a neat, melodic and catchy album, Boy For You becomes two-dimensional by its conclusion. --Found Sounds

A confession to start. I bought this album in error, thinking it was something else. A mistake I never regretted, and one of the luckiest musical breaks I've ever had.

The songwriting, lyricism and vocals on 'Boy for you' are to die for - now lush and swoonsome, now stark and heart-wrenching - there is so much raw emotion on parade here, you'd have to be dead not to feel involved.

'World at your feet' is a love song for when you're throwing yourself despairingly at someone ("And if I had a wish, I would give it to you / And my only wish would be yours came true").

The super-confident harmonies are infectious (as on 'I am the boy for you'), and songs like 'Hozanna' are brimming with more hooks than you'd credit on an album you'd never heard. Guitars jangle unashamedly, a piano weaves in and out dextrously, it's a glorious sound.

I shudder to think how close I came to never hearing 'Boy for you'. Don't make the mistake I nearly did - buy it. If it doesn't permanently lodge in your top ten albums of all time, you need your ears checking... or maybe your heart. I love it.

This Astrid is not to be confused with the Edwin Collins-produced Scottish band of the same name. Astrid Williamson's debut is a tuneful, intelligent slice of female pop-rock to be filed in the same draw as Heather Nova and Leona Naess. Avoiding the sometimes over-angsty nature of Alanis Morissette, and with fewer guitars, Astrid's music is pleasant, life-affirming stuff. Sometimes upbeat, sometimes swooningly beautiful, this is never less than enjoyable, although - like Heather Nova - she perhaps lacks that extra something that would make her a megastar. Nonetheless, Boy For You is a highly assured debut which suggests a long and rewarding career. Recommended.

Ask anyone who Astrid is and you'd be hard pushed to find the right answer, but don't let her lack of commercialism put you off. Astrid is one of those undiscovered gems just waiting to sing to you and boy does she. The opening 'I am the boy for you' has Tori Amos style lyrics all over it, but don't be decieved, she takes you through country lanes of Heather Nova, Shea Seger and Leona Naess essences and yet still retains an identity of her own. Tracks like 'What Do You..' just draw you in to her world and the well polished 'Outside' contrasts beautifully with the folky 'World At Your Feet'. Definitely a highlight in any record collection and fingers will bleed with the number of times you press back before track 2 just to her that stomping start all over again, I know mine do. Well thought out and on target. BANG. A direct hit.

These reviews all seem to be damning this fantastic record with faint praise... It's not a "pleasant pop/rock" album at all, it's a brilliant mixture of electric & acoustic sounds, applied to solid, catchy, intelligent songs & sung by a pure, incredible voice half purr/half bell like clarity. The reference points I heard where Candian Oddity Jane Siberry & 4ad curios Throwing Muses... but sadly any women who sings seems destined to be copmpared to a litany of other women who sing & it doesn't seem fair to belittle this huge talent. So maybe just take this album for what it is.. a unique & joyfull experience!

Astrid Wiliamson is an extremely gifted songwriter and musician. The album has shown she has a lot to offer and has come a long way since Goya Dress. Her ability to write about love from so many different and interesting perspectives is alarming. You would have thought everything had been said about the subject but Astrid can still touch a raw nerve.
