All in all, they are worth spending that bit more to get superior quality. I purchased B&W P5 headphones 19 months ago & I preferred those to these; however, I cannot say a bad word about Bower & Wilkins or their headphones other their customer service. I had to purchase a cable after mine snapped & the lady I spoke to was polite & the cable arrived promptly.
The thing that makes these stand out is the overall sound in the mid range, many headphones have clarity on higher frequencies With reasonable bass. These have it all across, instruments stand out in recordings & they sound very natural. I followed some advice & played them at half level for a couple of hours just plugged in with out listening, whether tha makes a difference I don't know but im really impressed with them, Comes with a spare cable & cute carry case
I tried the B&W P5s next to the P3s, and if money were no object, my first choice was the P5s. However, for the difference in price, and given their ability to fold, the sound quality from the P3s made them really good value. I haven't been disappointed, having used them almost daily for a year now. When you first try them on next to a pair of P5s the P5s are immediately more comfortable, and the P3s initially feel a little hard on the ears especially after extended listening. However, I think this is probably due to the springiness of the headband being quite strong when new, and this eases off with time and regular use, so that they are now perfectly comfortable.
Although they are on-ear, they do not leak excessive sound and do not disturb anyone else in the vicinity. They also do not let much extraneous external sound in, but with music off you can hear the world around you.
I have compared these directly with some of the noise reducing types, including Bose (which in my opinion make the best of that type), and Panasonic versions. In my opinion the sound quality of the Bowers & Wilkins P3 is superior. Since the P3 ear pads exclude external noise sufficiently for general use I am quite happy that I made the right choice for my use. I have used them during transatlantic flights too, and was still happy with them - although, arguably in that environment the noise reduction capabilities of other makes are a bonus - for example if you just want to sit & sleep in silence. If you're a regular flier maybe that's something to consider, but for occasional fliers who want the best sound quality per buck, I'd vote B&W.
Overall if you're a serious listener, and can tell the difference between the (frankly lousy) fashion headphones and something decent; and you want something portable, "relatively" inexpensive, but still great quality, then these are for you.
Unfortunately there have however been two downsides to them.
The first, when I first got them after about 30 minutes wear I noticed my head felt like it'd been in a clamp. Easy way to sort this is take the memory phone covers off and then leave them stretched over the box for a couple of nights when your not using them. Soon stops your head from feeling like they've been in a clamp and they're very comfy headphones after that
The second, and very disappointing for a piece of kit from a manufacturer like B&W, one of the earphones fell off at the point the metal connects to the headband. Luckily for me this was about 5 and a half months from purchase, so Amazon replaced them free of charge. Hopefully this won't happen to my second pair.
