Discover a more expansive way to follow Jesus
In his many travels as a researcher for Youth With A Mission, Bryan Bishop has discovered a startling phenomenon: hidden movements of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and others who are experiencing and following Jesus outside the boundaries of traditional Western Christianity. Through colorful firsthand accounts, Bishop explains how these fresh expressions of faith can revitalize our own.

In the second section of the book, the author identifies four boundary breaking principles that characterize these movements: (1) Put the Bible and discussion of it at the center of group meetings; (2) Move toward Jesus, not focusing on labels, organizations, or institutions; (3) “Turn pagan into holy” – the daring, uncomfortable and persistent transformation of pagan elements of their religious tradition into conveyers of biblical meaning; (4) Stay curious and seek God’s truth in their religions and connect it to gospel truth. The issue of how to “turn the pagan into holy” is central to concerns over syncretism; unfortunately, few missions thinkers and practitioners reflect on the process by which many formerly pagan forms, rituals and practices with pagan origins became acceptable parts of Western Christianity.
The third section is entitled “Living Beyond Borders.” The author describes his own experiences of concern, anxiety, and doubt that most readers will identify with. He is balanced and fair in sharing the contrasting perspectives of supporters and critics of these insider believers. Despite his struggles, Bishop shares what leads him to affirm and rejoice in what he sees happening in these movements. An appendix provides 10 discovery Bible studies that any group could use to explore the issues this book introduces. This is really a great book! In an extremely engaging way, it introduces the popular audience to the key issues of a complex topic. See for yourself!
