very good west coast jazz from one of the top performers and a fine line up .Strong solo work from all particularly Conte Candoli. Some good originals and imaginative arrangements. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable session.

HASH(0x8f5196cc) out of 5 stars The test of time 19 Jun. 2008

Those of you already familiar with Shelly Manne and his Men already know that these guys swing terrifically but something that makes this album especially interesting is the substitution of Frank Strozier's modern alto in place of former sideman Richie Kamuca's Pres-inspired tenor. Strozier's consummate blend of inside/outside blowing endows this group with a wonderfully vital edge.

As musically accomplished and swinging as any of Shelly's classic albums of the 50's, 'Boss Sounds' (recorded live in 1966 at Shelly's Manne Hole, Hollywood) is an unheralded jazz gem full of taut ensemble arrangements and focused soloing that sounds just as vibrant and modern as the day it was recorded.

HASH(0x8fee60f0) out of 5 stars Excellent 2 Aug. 2012

Jimmy Rowles' arrangement of Margie! is wonderful. It's as if Rowles channeled Monk in devising this sardonic arrangment. The Frank Strozier songs Idle One (a little bit too much like Coltrane's Naima but so what!) and Frank's Tune are great. Don Specht's Wandering is first-rate, and so is Russ Freeman's You Name It. Monte Budwig, Shelly Manne and Russ Freeman form the excellent rhythm section, and along with altoist Strozier trumpeter Conte Candoli is the other soloist.
HASH(0x8f625570) out of 5 stars One of Shelly's best. Even though it's a drummer-led band 3 July 2016

One of Shelly's best. Even though it's a drummer-led band, Shelly serves the music as rhythm section stalwart with no long drum solos. The hero here is the under-rated and now obscure saxophonist, Frank Strozier. Not only is his playing great, but he contributes two wonderful compositions.
Just a special recording date.

Compared to the fifties discs listed above, I found this much less masterful and enjoyable. Worth having, but try the other discs first... they are masterpieces.

HASH(0x8fbb19b4) out of 5 stars west coast jazz at it s best 3 Sept. 2000

shelly manne wwas sometimes overlooked since he spent a good bit of his time working on commercial jingles, but mr. manne was a superb drummer who assembled some great groups for laid-back, west coast sessions. this album is a high water mark. the sound is the cool jazz of miles davis perfected by artists on the pacific jazz label (of whom russ freeman is here on piano), but blended with the blue note sound (hard bop of art blakey, horace silver, et al) to make a relaxing pure jazz experience. it's a live set meaning things get extended and loose, but always swinging. it's hard to pick a highlight because all six tracks offer great solos and good band work. frank stozier (tenor sax) and mr. freeman stand out, though. the sound is not as biting as some of the east coast stars, but it sure helps you settle in and unwind. in short, it swings, softly. a good album...
