This SD1 'Overdrive' is just brilliant and serves is purpose just great, linked up right next to a DS1 Distortion "Boss" box.

Mingle these two to choose from, as you go along & for good measure, just throw in a RV5 Digital Reverb & you've got all you will ever need. 🎸 Heaven ~ Thanks 'Boss'

Would be be a 5 star review if it was true bypass. Slight buzz when play in clean which really bugged me even though it wasn't that noticeable, but was still aware of it. Great sound when used dirty or to push the valves in the amps dirty channel. Ended up returning and getting a different pedal with true bypass.

Wanted a drive pedal more for a treble boost on a very old tube amp without ruining its natural sound. This does the job very well and actually boosts the amps volume as well without killing it with top end screech. Will probably look at a Boss Blues Driver and possibly a stand alone treble (Rangemaster clone) booster but cannot fault this for a subtle, very user friendly bit of kit.

Excellent value basic drive pedal, works well as a device to increase volume for lead work or to drive a valve amp - I use mine through a Fender Blues re-issue which helps to add some crunch without undermining the basic character or clean tones of the amp - Ideal for a player who doesn't really use pedals but needs a boost when taking a lead.

cheap - cheap as say some really cheap pedals! - but built like a tank - not as transparent as boss's own OD-3 - but useful when you want a bit more compression - lovely light to medium drive - variety is the spice etc. - never likely to break - batteries last ridiculously long - definite middle bump so good as a lead boost in a live mix - very flexible tone control seems to alter character and tone
2016 - still on John 5's board apparently

Boss pedals are acclaimed for being great pedals and I'm sure that the majority of them are. However I'm not holding anything back when I say that this pedal often sounds tinny and has a very "soft" overdrive sound. To me, there's no crispness or character to it at all. It does sometimes sound okay with the tone rolled way off for a bluesy crunch though. Overall however, this pedal didn't live up to its name. I bought an EHX Soul Food pedal instead and it was fantastic.... Rich, authentic and transparent!

Honestly speaking, I was deceived by the name 'Super' when I passed by a guitar shop on my holiday. Over Drive OD3 cost over £70 I knew. I was looking for a pedal that sounds heavier or noisier or crunchier than OD3. The display 'Boss SD1 Super Over Drive ONLY £35' got its chance to mislead me.

Once I was back home, I straight away jacked my guitar in and hit the chord with SD1. I could not get heavier or noisier or crunchier sound that I hoped for. Disappointed at first, I could not even go back on holiday to the same place for refund. Having no choice, I had to keep it. Keep it on the chain next to DS1.

The more I used it, the more I got used to with its sound. It leaves me to wonder when they describe the sound of pedals in words like crunchy, natural, warm, deep, flat, etc. This one sounds like as if the sharp edges of that crunchy sound of Over Drive OD3 is smoothed out. And the condensed dots in the overdriven sound are thinned out. Now I don't have to switch the knobs of DS1 every now and then for different music. For heavy stuff I kick DS1 and for soft and bluesy SD1.

Still I wonder what is in the name 'Super'. But I learnt now that it is one of the Super Cool pedals the Boss made.

I have to be honest, this overdrive ain't for me. I've tried hard to love it, but the cut lows and boosted mids just don't work for me. I've had the pedal about 4 years, and try as I might, I just can't seem to get along with it.

But... It may be exactly what you're looking for. Its tonally very similar to the legendary Ibanez Tubescreamer (perhaps slightly brighter)... It produces a smooth, natural sounding overdrive that works best when pushing a slightly crunchy valve amplifier. If you're after the Tubescreamer sound, check this baby out first, and save yourself a heap of cash.

So, while its not really my cup of tea, it does what its designed to do very well, and at a very tempting price. Its worth stressing that this is designed to push a valve amplifier... Using it as a standalone crunch pedal with a solid state amp will leave you very disappointed.

So I recommend this pedal to anyone looking for that Tubescreamer sound... If that's not your thing, you'd probably be better off with either the BD-2 Blues Driver, or the OD-3 Overdrive.
