About The Product
What’s the point of having music on your phone if you can’t play it where you want, when you want? Get ready to play your music with richer, more intense sound than you’d expect from such a small speaker. The SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile speaker II wirelessly connects with your tablet, laptop, iPhone, Android or BlackBerry so you’ll always have your music at hand.
Design on the run
Lightweight and small enough to carry in your hand or fit in a travel bag or backpack, the speaker weighs less than 1.4 kg and measures approximately 13 cm x 24 cm x 4.5 cm. The buttons on top of the speaker lets you handle the volume and power, and your Bluetooth device controls everything else— streaming music stations, playlists, etc. No remote control required.
With its 10m wireless range, you can keep your tablet, phone or other Bluetooth device with you while placing the SoundLink Mobile speaker II wherever you desire. An integrated bi-fold cover flips open to become a convenient stand, so you can play your music everywhere.
A rechargeable lithium-ion battery keeps the music going strong for up to eight hours, even while emailing, texting, or surfing the internet. To give you a clear indication of battery life, the enhanced status light switches from yellow to red. If there’s an outlet nearby, simply use the included power adapter—it'll charge the battery while you listen. An empty battery usually takes about two to three hours to charge. There’s also an optional car charger so you can charge the speaker en route.
Enjoy ease of control. Your Bluetooth device controls your playlists, streaming music stations, etc, while you can adjust the power and volume via the controls on top. You won’t require a remote control. Protect your speaker during travel with the integrated bi-fold cover, which unfolds into a stand for instant playing anywhere. Match the speaker to your style with additional covers. Available separately in tan or burgundy leather or purple or red nylon. Play other audio sources, such as an MP3 or portable DVD/CD player, using the auxiliary input. Software updates via the USB port ensure on-going Bluetooth device compatibility.

Appearance wise, it looks as stylishly chic as Bose speakers always do. The wrap around cover converts to a stand that is stable. In terms of portability, it's not small, but the big issue is the weight. It weighs in at a little over 1.3kg - on the one hand this makes it robust and stable, but quite how portable that makes it is debatable. It's well built though.
Ease of set up is simple. It pairs with blue tooth devices simply. It can store up to six devices but can, obviously, only connect with one at a time. Sometimes it does get confused and I've had to re-pair active devices a couple of times. It's so simple that this isn't an issue but it's not faultless.
Feature-wise, in some regards it can be lacking, but equally, it doesn't need many features. For example, you don't get a remote control, but Bose argue that your device (mp3, tablet, laptop etc) all have controls on them so you can just use those. It does have a volume button on the unit though which you can use manually. The main feature I would have liked that it doesn't have is a speakerphone ability. If you are playing on a smart phone, the sound does cut when the phone rings, but the speaker isn't enabled for the call. The other annoying omission is a lead to connect non-bluetooth units to the input jack on the back. They are relatively cheap to obtain but when you are paying a premium price, albeit lower than many Bose units, it still feels like a mean shortcut. Also, slightly irritatingly, it will power down if you leave it off and you have to manually turn it on with the switch. This means, for example that you cannot use it as a speaker to an alarm on your unit.
The key issue though for most is sound and performance.Read more ›
- can wirelessly stream music from a range of devices;
- are portable;
- are rechargeable;
- produce fantastic sound quality.
Is this achievable? Yes it is. Is it achievable at an affordable price though?!
The output of these speakers is stunning - very clean, with a punchy bass that is belied by the package the size of a clock-radio, and capable of filling a house, let alone a room, with music. They pick up a blue-tooth signal at a range of - well, we managed to stream across the house, but they claim 10 metres. The unit doesn't look as beautiful as (say) an Apple product - but it's well-thought-out - neat things like the flappy thing making a stand, or when folded up switching off the power.
This represents the next-generation solution to the problem that boomboxes/mini-speakers/iPod docks try to solve - taking music with you - and it's probably the most versatile and least hassle solution. I guess the target customers are the people who would be looking for high-end versions of these things in previous eras; whether they would be prepared to pay this much remains to be seen. But those who do are likely to draw covetous looks.
However, as of yesterday I'm waiting for labels to send this back to Bose (in Belgium of all places). First of all it stopped connecting with my devices, a problem fixed by looking on the web for tips. Then the unit stopped holding a charge and then it finally stopped making any sounds, even when connected to my phone with an auxiliary cable. I've had it for ten months but as it's very much a secondary device it may well have been used for no more than 20-30 hours.
Anything can go wrong, I suppose, but at nearly £250 just for a speaker you'd rather hope not. I was dealt with by a very nice woman on Bose's helpline, but I would have been much happier if Bose had replaced the unit - as it is I have to send away and wait for 'up to 14 days' for it to be fixed.
This is the first Bose product I've bought and I had been looking at others (particularly the Wave) but will now be looking elsewhere.
