* '1 x Bosch Rotak 34 R Lawnmower

Out of the box, the 'corded' (Mains Powered) BOSCH Rotak 34 R (incidentally, the '34' relates to the cutting width of 34 cm for those not in the know) was relatively easy to assemble, but it is necessary to look at the bigger picture for further optical guidance - i.e. the box - rather than just rely on the instruction leaflet, if my experience is anything to go by!
A little bit of pressure is required to click the wheels into place and the 2-height handle needed some pondering, but in reasonably quick time this compact and relatively lightweight mower (11.3 kg) was ready for action.
The 40-litre grass-box seemed on the flimsy side - even when assembled - but it is efficient, with no problems in picking up every cut blade of grass with the two weeks growth it was first set to task on and less emptying trips (compared to my ageing flymo).
There are 5 cutting heights:
* 20 mm
* 30 mm
* 45 mm
* 55 mm
* 70 mm
which are easily set, and around 10 m of cable which is OK, but then an extension flex has always been necessary for the lawn area, in my particular case. The machine is easy to manoeuvre and the wheels make it easy to get right up to the edges.
And....as it also says on the box...Read more ›
I have had the original Rotak 34 for about 5 years, and it is a solid workhorse, very reliable and sturdily built. This seemed like an ideal replacement, same company, same model, more updated design.
Fitting it together is fairly straightforward, just really the handle to fit and the wheels, the blade is already connected. It feels more front heavy than the original, which has a more centralised weight balance, this threw me at first. The handle now fully folds down, rather than just the top half. However, it seems more cumbersome to do this. The bottom are two pull levers that makes it a quick release foldaway design, but the middle 2 are screw out, like the original, but the handles make them more difficult to locate and screw back together later.
The cut height is not as easily selected as previous and for some reason, does not seems to cut as close as before, a little disappointing.
However, the worst part of all is the collection box. Gone is the sturdy black and green box to be replaced by a flimsy fold away box. The idea being that you unclip the two halves and store one inside the other for a compact storage. However, they do not seem to line up very good and it feels extremely flimsy, not very solid at all. It took quite a few tries to locate it properly to ensure it would collect the grass properly whilst not falling apart. I would rather have a more solid grass box than a flimsy foldaway one.
It seems that in trying to make this as small a footprint as possible hen being stored, the build quality has suffered as a result. I still prefer my older one and will continue using that for as long as possible.
It's been quite some 8 years since I cut my own grass, but the neighbour who used to do it for me is now too busy to manage it often enough, so I was prepared to loathe the job and find it an awful chore. Instead the mower cut through a three week growth of quite a large front lawn in jig time, and right up to the edges so I really did not have to strim at all. My back grass is a disaster area after the terribly wet winter as I have two young German shepherds who turned into a replica of the Somme, complete with trenches!. I just went fairly slowly to allow for all the ruts and potholes and clumps, and it was great.
All in all I'm very impressed, and though I wouldn't quite say I enjoyed cutting the meadows, it certainly wasn't a horrible chore.
5 stars from me.
I bought the Rotak 34 R from Amazon after intensively studying reviews and am absolutely delighted with it.
Our lawn is bordered by stone walls and a fence board on one side. The Bosch mows right up to these - shears are not needed. It is amazing. What previously took an hour with the Flymo and shears to give a poor result now takes ten minutes to complete with an excellent cut.
