I recently bought Bosch's PSB 18 LI-2 Cordless 18 Volt Hammer Drill. I found the drill bits loosening during use. Reading reviews revealed this as a common problem. This newer replacement is not only slightly smaller but brakes a little more gently with no loosening without having to really over-tighten the chuck. I returned that model for this one.
Although the newer model is virtually the same, there are a couple of important differences - this newer version does not have an accessory side handle - there is nowhere on the body for one to fit. The other difference is that there are two adjustment rings: the inner one selects between screw driving, drilling and hammer action whilst the outer selects the torque setting for screw-driving. The slide switch above the handle selects the gear between drilling & slower for screw-driving. The finger trigger further adjusts speed with very good control. The switch above the trigger changes rotational direction or locks the chuck which is keyless.
I have a 9V Bosch cordless drill that takes Ni-CAD batteries (one which gave up). This 18V model uses very superior Lithium Ion battery technology that does not fade from fully charged but just stops; the charge will remain for months rather than a week or two and the battery will fully charge in approximately one hour whether or not it is attached to the drill. An accessory 2AH battery is available that fits in the plastic carrying case. The supplied battery is a standard 1.5AH - they are both the same size.
I have used this drill in wood using HSS drills, into partition walls & plaster/brick using hammer action with masonry bits - the latter being far more impressive than expected! I also did some screw driving on both slotted & Pozi headed screws - Pozi screws really need the exact correct size!

This has got to be as small as a drill can get because it just fits nicely in the hand. Light and compact, its reduced size has not compromised its functionality for the DIY user. How many of us ever need to hammer drill a 50mm hole through an outside wall? Let's leave that to the experts and concentrate on what I think makes this Bosch PSB 1800 an ideal drill for the average homeowner.

1. Cordless - The Bosch 18 volt Lithium battery is brilliant and can also be used with other Bosch tools in the range. It can be charged at any time to keep it topped-up without damaging it (I've got a three year old Bosch strimmer that came with the same 18v battery and it's still as strong as it was when new).

2. Keyless Chuck - Easy to insert and remove bits. This is how all modern drills are now made.

3. Combined Drill and Screwdriver - By just turning the plastic ring it's easy to switch from drilling to screwdriving.

4. Torque Settings - With the right setting it's possible to gently tighten screws or drive them in so hard that the head almost disappears. The drill also has a hammer setting for drilling through stone.

5. Light - Such a simple idea but so useful. A small light illuminates the area immediately in front of the drill head (it can be surprisingly dark under the stairs!).

Although Bosch recommend a maximum drilling depth of 30mm I would be happy to go deeper. This little PSB 1800 is such a solid drill and it's replaced my perfectly good larger cordless drill. I just like the feel of it and it does exactly what I want. Hard to imagine how it could be improved.

Additional - 01 May 2015 - With thanks to a fellow reviewer.
'Just a quick note - the drilling parameters specified by Bosch are width of the hole, not the depth.

I have always had Bosch electric drills and they have always proven themselves to be reliable and sturdy. This 18V driver is powerful enough to drill a decent sized hole (10mm) into solid walls, yet light enough to be easy and comfortable to use.

Having two batteries is extremely useful as you can charge one while using the other. It can be really frustrating to have to stop mid way through a job because the battery has run out. The 1.5ah batteries that this comes with last quite a long time. The fastest that I have managed to run a battery down is around 30 to 40 minutes. However, that was the rather extreme case of drilling holes into hard tiles with a diamond drill bit - where each hole took a few minutes of constant drilling. Generally, the battery will last far longer than this - and far longer than it takes to recharge one battery while you are using another. You can buy larger capacity 2ah (around £30) and 2.5ah (around £40) batteries but I find that having two batteries eliminates any requirement for having a higher capacity battery. (Note that the Bosch professional batteries with 4ah and 5ah capacities do not fit this drill.) The key advantage of lithium ion batteries is that they do not discharge while not being used. So even if you haven't used the drill in a few months you will find the battery is still just as charged as when you last used it.

The Bosch chuck-less system works very well.

I had a previous version of this drill and this model appears to be a refinement of that one - being slightly smaller and lighter. I was disappointed that the drill no longer comes with a separate handle for heavy duty drilling jobs.
