Blade tip protector
The integrated blade tip protector provides good protection for the blade while you work.

I have long expanses of hedges that I have to look after and have also got a petrol hedge trimmer. However, the problem with the petrol hedge trimmers is that they are very noisy, prone to starting problems and most importantly they tend to make the user tire quite quickly due to the combination of weight and vibration.
This is where the Bosch cordless hedge trimmer comes in. Its is incredibly quiet in operation and has very little vibration and is light enough to wield for the entire run of the battery. I get around 40 minutes of use from the trimmer, but you have to remember that 40 minutes of cutting is actually a long time and allows for a significant amount of hedge trimming to be done on one charge. Once the battery is spent, a welcome sit down with a cup of tea for about an hour while it recharges and I am good to go again. Of course, for the more energetic you could always just get a spare battery so there is no break required.
The machine has not let me down once and has produced a very good finish on a range of hedges from hawthorns to beech to leylandii and has coped brilliantly with each of them.
I would recommend this heartily to anyone who has a lot of hedges to deal with as it is very impressive.
My only negative is the spare batteries seem to be very expensive but I guess you would only need one spare to keep you going and the other equipment in the range could then be bought 'bare' (i.e.. with no battery) saving a significant amount.
I can't recommend this highly enough.
Yes,after two summers' use, I can confidently say this is the best hedge trimmer I've ever used, by quite some margin. It was a very good buy. The high price seems irrelevant now.
ONE YEAR AGO (original review)
Once you've got past the rather cheap packaging and read the scrap of paper that passes for an instruction book you can start to be more impressed with this pricey hedge trimmer.
The battery looks too tiny to power it, but it actually does a solid job and only takes 45 minutes to fully recharge thanks to a high-power charger with built-in cooling fan. The charger is huge though. The battery has a built in LED meter so you can see if it needs charging by pressing a red button. A good feature is that the battery detach mechaanism (you press a button) has two stages – stage one detaches the battery from the power socket making the trimmer safe to carry but leaving it attached to the body of the trimmer, the second stage detaches it from the body completely. This is a thoughtful piece of design.
The trimmer itself is typical Bosch. It seems well made, and it's pretty light, at least when you first start trimming the hedge. Has a knack of getting progressively heavier! I'm usually exhausted before the battery is.
There are three buttons that wrap right around the inside of the main handle and this means you can use it at all sorts of angles and is a really good feature. The main button has a bit of crunchy feel to it that's not very pleasant, but it works fine.
When you first use it you may be surprised, like I was, that the blades don't seem to move very quickly. I thought that might mean it wouldn't cut well but this certainly isn't the case. It cuts very well indeed and gives a really professional finish. it's also very quiet, and your hands don't vibrate for ten minutes after you've done the job!
There's nothing like a really long blade to make things easier with a wide, tall hedge like mine. I wish I'd got a long-blade trimmer earlier. The 'sawing' action for thick 'branches' really works too and I've managed to cut trhough some parts of my hedge I would have needed shears or a saw for with my old trimmer.
I've also been impressed by its resistance to jamming. Top marks for this.
Obviously this is a lot of money and you can get much cheaper trimmers, but the long blade, quietness, sheer power and the tiny quick-charging lithium battery mean it should be worth the extra money in the long run. Once you have this model with its battery, you can buy other Bosch garden equipment that uses the same battery as a 'baretool' and save some money.
The most unexpected benefit has been the way it has changed my whole attitude to cutting the hedge. With minimal planning I can now simply pickup up the trimmer, click in the battery and cut (before I can think of a reason not to). I now find myself cutting far more often - the regular maintenance has not only improved the hedge, but reduced the vast piles of woody clippings I was used to.
Two Bosch hedge cutters is not a cheap strategy, but for anyone with enough hedge and a sinking feeling when it's time to cut, I thoroughly recommend it.
