AKE 30 LI - No petrol. No cable. Full power.
The Bosch AKE 30 LI chainsaw is lightweight with an efficient, high performance electric motor for maximum power with the convenience of cordless. Powered by an innovative 36 V / 2.6 Ah lithium-ion battery. It has a full 30 cm bar length, and the Oregon chain runs at a speed of 8 m/s, making the chainsaw powerful yet easy to use.
Powerful lithium-ion battery
The AKE 30 LI is powered cordlessly by a 36 V 2.6 Ah lithium-ion battery, which allows the freedom to move around the garden without the hassle of cutting through cables. The battery has a charge time of just 95 minutes (80% in 65 minutes), which provides enough power to complete up to 100 cuts through 10 x 10 cm pine wood in one charge. The large steel gripping teeth allow for good leverage, accurate cutting and reduced possibility of kick back.
Ergonomic and easy to use
The AKE 30 LI features a twin-dial SDS system, for a quick and easy start to work thanks to the tool-free chain assembly and tensioning. The automatic oiling and oil level indicator enables clean lubrication of the chain to avoid running the chainsaw dry, giving you a longer product life.
Rapid reaction kick back brake
Safety is the number one priority when using a chainsaw so if you fall or sudden movements affect your balance you want to rely on the brakes. This chainsaw offers a dual brake system for almost instantaneous stopping; a rapid rundown brake for normal operation plus an electronic kick back brake. The rapid reaction kick back brake also has an audible warning for increased user safety whilst cutting.
Lightweight and easy to carry
The AKE 30 LI weighs just 3.6 kg making it extremely lightweight for a chainsaw and very easy to carry, causing minimal strain to your back and arms. It has been designed with optimum balance for any working position and has more than enough power to carry out any task in your garden and is incredibly easy to manoeuvre whilst working.
Powered by Bosch Lithium-ion technology
The AKE 30 LI is powered by a 36 V / 2.6 Ah lithium-ion battery which means:
- Long run time: a fully charged battery will allow for up to 100 cuts through 10 x 10 cm pine wood per charge.
- No self-discharge: lithium-ion batteries retain their charge whilst stored (in cool, dry conditions), so the chainsaw is ready to use when you’re ready to use it.
- Compact and lightweight: lithium-ion batteries are up to 50% lighter than conventional batteries-but with all the power.
- No memory effect: lithium-ion batteries retain their full charge capacity and can be re-charged up to 4 times more than standard batteries.
- Fast charging: Say goodbye to 24 hour charging – the AKE 30 LI can be fully charged in just 95 mins.

Buying tips for choosing your chainsaw: the right chainsaw helps with tree care to enable you to enjoy a tidy garden. Bosch offers you an assortment of chainsaws with and without cables. The biggest benefit of our corded range is the motor is powerful and requires no real maintenance - just turn it on and go. If you want to cut branches or hard woods that are further away from a power source or awkwardly positioned, our cordless chainsaw is a better choice. All Bosch chainsaws have automatic oiling to help prevent running the chainsaw dry. You'll also need to consider the size of the material you wish to cut. The larger the task, the bigger the bar length and the more power you'll need.

Addendum dated 24.09.2015: further experience has confirmed all the above but, in addition, I was using the saw on light duty yesterday when smoke billowed from the motor. That is the end of the story I guess. Taking this together with two Bosch battery chargers dying just outside the guarantee period - one 18v and one 36v - to which Bosch's response was to offer to mend them for more than the cost of a new unit, I am now looking elsewhere for my battery driven hand tools.
2nd addendum dated 19.11.2017 - subsequently I have purchased a Greenworks battery operated chainsaw which is a great improvement on the Bosch - doesn't clog so easily, battery charge indicator, brake on alarm, chain oil level window, etc.
This Bosch, I intended to use for pruning thicker branches on bushes and thinner ones on small trees, and the odd log or two for the fire. However, I was surprised to find that after the second charge, the battery had enough life in it to do a good hour's pruning in the garden (obviously not running all the time!) and then have enough life to chop up a whole large barrow full of logs.
The saw does NOT like ordinary chain oil - the recommended oil is MUCH thinner, so if you try ordinary oil don't be surprised if it won't feed, and you overheat the chain. You could probably use standard saw chain oil watered down with veg oil, but Bosch say anything other than theirs invalidates the warranty, so wait until it is a couple of years old before you try! Chains seem well made, by Oregon, so best quality, and easily available as spares. As I have a 36 Volt Rotak lawnmower (see other review), which came with 2 batteries, choosing this was an easy option, and I have just ordered a 36V Hedge trimmer to complete the set.
I have only given the saw light use so far to take down a lime tree with an 8" trunk, but it went through it pretty quickly so I can't relate to other reviewer's comments about it being slow. Speed of cut is surely a function of the chain speed, sharpness and material. I made over 100 cuts in about two hours work (most of them only a few inches of thickness) and the battery still had plenty of life.
I would not recommend this for "serious" work, but for light felling and heavy duty pruning I think it is ideal.
UPDATE: DECLARED "BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR" MAY 2014
I'm rather disappointed that after limited use this saw has been declared "beyond economic repair" by both my local Bosch dealer (who took 2 weeks and charged £25) and Bosch themselves who collected for free via Fedex, replied the day they received it and charged nothing for inspection - so hats off to them for that.
Maybe I've worked it too hard, but I've charged the battery between ten and twenty times at most in the couple of years I've owned it. I have found it to be a really excellent tool, but I don't think I can write them off at this rate.
I use it with a sawhorse to hold the log steady and it will cut logs up to about 9" diameter.Cutting logs around 6" to 7" is an absolute doddle and an hours work can produce 3 to 4 heaped wheelbarrow loads which then just need splitting once.
It feels solid and safe. When you let go of the switch the chain stops extremely quickly. The automatic chain oiler is a boon as is the easy adjustment of the chain tension.
It has abundant power for anything which I am likely to want to do.The battery life is adaquate to cut plenty of wood on a single charge. When the battery does run out this is welcome because I can have s rest for about an hour while it charges. I also have a Bosch 36V mower and the batteries are interchengeable. This is another great plus.
I wholeheartedly recommend this chainsaw and also the mower.
