Yesterday I tried this out and in an afternoon cut swathes of hedge very comfortably and happily without worrying about trailing cables. The cutter coped with hawthorn, privet and ivy without a murmur. Good cutting length and an excellent cut. I am a 70 year old woman and managed with ease, which is more than can be said of my old electric cable cutter or a rather fragile cordless I bought two years ago which did not leave a good finish as this Bosch did. One battery charge lasted two hours on about 200 feet, with heights varying from 5/6ft.

I agree this is a first rate tool. One hundred times better than the other leading brand which is poor by comparison . I love it and it is EASY to use and transport ANYWHERE any time !!! I am a woman who likes to be independant and this suits me fine. It is not too heavy to carry and use for long periods. The extra battery comes in handy too. Well pleased/ Would recommend to everyone !!! I like the long reach. It is not ill ballanced. A good workhorse.

This was a great trimmer when I bought it two years ago. It coped superbly with the pyracantha hedge (60 foot) at the front of my property and even the coniferous hedge at the rear which can have very thick growth. However, by last year I was having to use both batteries to do the job a single one would have done. This year they're both completely dead and the batteries (where you can find them) are about £50 EACH for replacements!
Great trimmer, useless batteries and be warned they have a limited lifetime so prepare to replace your trimmer or fork out for expensive replacement batteries 2 years down the line. I've just invested in a petrol trimmer which seems to be the sensible thing to do - these are heavy though so if this is a problem you may want to consider a trimmer with a more up to date battery technology such as Li-ion. Frankly I'm surprised Bosch are still selling NiCad based cordless equipment at around the same price I paid two years ago. My 2 pennerth.

Considering it used to take me about 3 hours with my old corded hedge cutter, I charged both batteries, expecting to easily need both, ready for another long assault on my conifer hedge. After cutting the first swathe, I actually took a step back, amazed at how easily it had managed. Being cordless, I'd expected it to struggle, but it managed to cut through some surprisingly thick branches, easily as thick as the budget corded cutter I previously used. It's light, well balanced and without the worry of a cable to cut, you can get so much more done in the same time. I'd finished the entire hedge on one battery, in less than an hour. It basically made what was normally a long and painful job almost trivial. Now I've tried one, I would never go back to a corded hedge cutter, cordless is just so much safer, as well as being easier to use. Well done Bosch, 5 stars, flawless.

Update - Ok, not quite so flawless. As with most other negative comments, the batteries are not a strong point of this model. I now have one battery that lasts about 30 minutes and the other about 5 minutes. However, standard NiCad batteries are generally poor at holding charge over time and will deteriorate/fail if left in a completely discharged state. The fact that the trimmer is not normally used between late Autumn and Spring is possibly a reason why these batteries sometimes only last a couple of years before becoming useless.

If I were buying another of these, I'd just pop the batteries back in the charger every month or so to keep them topped up and hopefully prevent this problem. I do this now with my old batteries and they haven't completely failed yet.

I am, like a few other posters, surprised that Bosch is still selling cordless devices with NiCad batteries.

Update June 2012: Almost three years after buying, the hedgecutter just won't start at all, using either battery, and I have had to purchase a new one. This is disappointing as it was such a good tool and I expected longer use out of it. (I notice several of the negative reviews on here are from people who have owned it longer and experienced similar, so be aware it may not last much beyond the 2 year guarantee). I have downgraded it from five to four stars as a result.

    Original review:
Very easy-to-use, lightweight, hedgecutter. Pleasantly surprised by the low noise and smooth running blades. As a female who finds lawnmowers tiring to use, this hedgecutter was a breeze in comparison. It comes with two batteries, but the first battery was still going strong by the time I had finished. Excellent product!

This is a good hedge trimmer for a season. In the second season the batteries loose at least half their charge life. By the third season the batteries only last seconds after a full charge. So, the tool appears cheap to purchase, but beware it only lasts for two years. You could of course purchase two replacement batteries but this would set you back over £100-00. This battery technology is basically rubbish, I would urge you to buy a trimmer with cable or engine, or revert to shears!
