Product description
Bosch Professional 7-piece Multipurpose Drill Bit Set CYL-9
The CYL-9 MultiConstruction drill bit offers stable drilling in all materials. Its tungsten carbide centring tip allows for a precise start to drilling with good guidance. The diameter-optimised AWB brazing and hardening technology makes the 2-cutter more robust and reduces vibration during use. In addition, the 4-flute durable design of the drill bit with a reinforced core section ensures better wear resistance and stability when drilling in soft concrete.
The drill bit is suitable for practically all materials in interior fitting work, e.g. soft concrete, masonry, brick, cement, lightweight building materials, multilayered materials, ceramics and tiles, wood, plastics, sheet metal and aluminium. Its cylindrical shank system makes it suitable for all corded or cordless impact drills and ensures perfect results when drilling with and without impact function.
The CYL-9 MultiConstruction drill bit has diamond-cut cutting edges and a specially ground tip, making it perfect for multi-purpose drilling. This drill bit is made of extremely robust tungsten carbide with a fine grain size, has an extra long service life and offers optimum wear resistance. The set comes in a robust and compact Robust Line box that offers both a good overview as well as safe storage and transport.

Drilling through tile on plaster on wood? Drilling through a batten on plaster on brick?
With these multi-construction bits, save yourself time and just drill straight through mixed materials without having to change bits. Sure, the holes aren't as neat as using a proper wood bit, but these bits are for general DIY where it'll be covered by whatever you're attaching over the hole.
As long as you keep the speed down (hammer mode, or normal) and let the chisel tip bite away, these bits will last longer than cheap jobber ones. Run the drill fast, and the tips will heat up and blunten down very quickly – no different from other bits in that regard. I've had mixed results on concrete lintels - sometimes the multi-construction bits patiently bite their way through, but sometimes they just come out blunted. For concrete, I'd recommend the DeWalt Extreme Masonry Drillbit which worked fine on a lintel using this drill. Yes, they say you need an SDS drill for lintels, but the combination of the D024K and the DeWalt bit worked just fine.
Keep a case of these handy, and top up with individual replacements as you need. These have now replaced my cheap high street selection boxes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Lets address the manufacturers claims;
1. "For drilling in all kinds of materials " - firstly as a caveat I have only used these on brick and aluminum and they performed poorly on both, the masonry in particular. The 8mm bit widened an existing 6mm hole in an aluminum bracket okay with no noticeable blunting, but took about twice as long as a half decent HSS bit would have.
2. "Rapid drilling" - Hell no! took me a good 5 minutes to drill a single 6x60mm hole into ordinary house brick, switched to my SDS drill in the end and drilled the remaining 7 holes in the less time than the first took (I know, why didn't I just use my SDS in the first place I hear you cry, well I was 8ft up a ladder and wanted to use my cordless).
3. "Long durability" - Another epic fail, the 6mm bits cutting edge was noticeably blunter than its unused siblings and the shaft had been visibly scored by the brick, after just a SINGLE hole. Suffice to say I was quite peed off given that I had followed the guidance on max RPM and not to use hammer action.
To conclude as I suspected a total gimmick and one i am surprised that a reputable manufacturer such as Bosch would have indulged in, it has in fact put me off purchasing any of their kit in the future, I'll be sticking to Dewalt drill bits in the future, they aren't cheap but they work as advertised. If I'd paid a tenner for the set I'd of shrugged it off, but at 20 quid I feel properly robbed (can't return as they've have been used, a nice Catch-22). Shame on you Bosch!
I haven't used the drills for long enough to get an impression of their service life but that are clearly superior to my old drills and well worth the price.
These are a little more expensive and worth every penny. They rip through brick, stone etc with little effort - always a good sign that the blade is doing the work without having to push hard - which just generates loads of heat.
These are going to last way longer than the cheaper ones, and are well worth the extra. Top marks.
Great problem solving addition to any tool kit.
Great for breeze block.
No hammer required
less noise, (handy when there is a meeting going on in the next room).
Recommended for plasterboard (doesn't blunt bits instantly like it does using HSS bits)
Great for getting you out of a tight spot, as they will go through anything.
Very handy for commercial buildings with steel clad concrete shuttering.
Use these to get through the steel, without the concrete taking the edge of the bits instantly. (like it would with any other kind of bits)
Then switch to standard SDS bits to finish off.
Cons
Slower going on all materials.
More likely to drift when starting hole in wood / plasterboard than HSS bits.
