The Royal Scots Fusiliers were my local regiment, and I've had great difficulty finding any books about the regiment during WWII, so when I saw this book, I had to buy it. I'm glad I did, I was not disappointed at all, as Cyril's story is fascinating, and is very well told indeed.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in; WWII, life in the '30s and '40s, and of course the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Cyril James has a good story to tell and Dave Foxton tells it really well. He has the ability to use a short telling phase to say a 'thousand words'.
The central theme of the book is war and Dave conveys how key war encounters are often random in their planning and execution. A point reinforced by the fact that Cyril can't help himself from endeavouring to be a good soldier, yet he is candid enough to acknowledge that his survival is as much due to luck, as due to the application of those skills.
If you are looking for a book full of heroic endeavour this is not the one for you. If you want to read a book that describes war as it is, from the perspective of an honest soldier look no further.

A dispassionate and compelling account of an "ordinary" man from the back streets of Leeds who fought his way through Germany. An ant-fascist with solid common sense, he more than "did his bit" for freedom and went on to live a long and fulfilled life in peacetime.

An excellent book, full of detail and first hand accounts. I couldn't put it down once started and it was really valuable to my research of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Cyril - thank you for sharing this with the world.

The introduction really matches what is a great book. Full of interest and information, following the life of a delightful character.
