Product Description

Review

A Book of Hours reveals in ways I have never experienced the hidden wellspring of Merton's contemplative life and art. This is a gorgeous book, beautifully conceived and intelligently executed. Deignan has woven a tapestry of Merton's prayer, prose, and poetry at their most ardent so as to re-educate our awareness that God is Beautiful and most worthy of our daily praise. This five-star book will snugly fit the pocket of your heart.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It gives a whole new perspective on praise and prayer. Thomas Merton's love of God, and the wonders of nature He created, flows from every page. At first, reading the introduction seemed long and "wordy", but as I read the "hours" I found a need to look back to the introduction, firstly for guidance, but also for more insight into Merton the man, who penned such breathtaking poetry. A book for any one wishing to deepen their own spirituality.

Merton wrote in a most thought provoking and quirky way. A contemplative, he shares his experience in a unique style; not ramming sanctity and puritanical values down the reader's throat, but humorously, poetically, simply. The reader can feel nature singing all around, from the humble husk of the fruit to the hills and the sun above. He observes human and Divine nature in a subtle but truly deep manner that amuses and delights.

Thank you for a most enjoyable read. Excellent help from a wonderful spiritual guide, and for the retired parish priest a well rounded summary of the remains of the day.

I have been a Merton man since Elected Silence (Seven Storey Mountain) in the late 1940s.He even sent me into a Cistercian monastery for a few years. But now I am afraid he has lost me. I find his poetry is beyond me. I am sad to say this,I just don't understand a lot of it. So now in my 80 s I am obviously past it.
