Do you want to know how to make a bee skep, or find someone who knows about stone carving? This book contains a series of articles and interviews with current practitioners in a host of traditional or ancient skilled crafts, some of which have been rediscovered, such as flint-knapping, some of which are rare but becoming more popular, such as handweaving or working with willow, and some of which, like the gunsmith, have been around for a long time but, because they are so specialist or need such specific skills, not much is heard about them. I was impressed at the broad spectrum of crafts and skills illustrated. Apart from finding out about the personalities and why they became interested in making and designing for their individual crafts, a brief description of the methods used and ways of acquiring the skills is included. The book is well illustrated with photographs of the practitioners and their handiwork. It will interest anyone who is looking for an interest and those who are looking for contacts with skilled practitioners in almost any traditional skill you care to think of, who can pass on their skills.

excellant book purchased for my father because the company he use to work for are in there and there is a picture of my brother. But the rest of the book is very interesting, it has been passed around the family and comes highly recommended with all these excellant crafts that do get forgotten about. excellant price for a hardback book with colour illustrated pictures, you will not be disappointed if you buy.

This is an excellent book - I am a hand craft worker myself, using non modern techniques and am enjoying reading this book. I would happily recommend it. Obviously it can't cover every craft in minute detail - and you wouldn't want it to - but it gives a great over view.

However, just about everything else you can imagine is in this "Book of Forgotten Crafts."

There are enough beautiful pictures for a coffee table book. On the other hand, there is enough information to get any one of these Crafts off the ground. I have dabbled in several of the crafts myself so they are not that forgotten. The information on the crafts I was involved in is impeccable. So from this I can surmise that the Crafts I have not tried yet are well represented.

If you do not take a chance on a craft at least this book helps you be aware of what you are missing. My only disappointment was that there was no entry for pine needle baskets.

My only problem is some of the Crafts needs special equipment and lots of space. I can just barely pack two looms couple of spinning wheels dye equipment, etc. in one room without tripping over each other. Just imagine blacksmithing in the garage.

However, I was able to make small devices blacksmithing in a class in school and expanded this to the actual job of blacksmithing at West Point, New York; I suggest if you get the opportunity even if you have to travel to the class. It is worth trying out. In the meantime you can read this book in dream.

Full of useful information. Includes crafts it's just good to know a bit about, like thatching and coopering, and others that you might have a go at yourself, like weaving and pottery. Makes a great gift for a practical person as there are plenty of entries to tempt them to start and maybe find a new hobby.
