WD Quality Inside and Out
For more than 20 years, millions of people worldwide have trusted their data to WD hard drives. We are successful because we understand the importance of your data and our first concern is keeping that data safe.
WD SmartWare Software
You're in control of your backup. With our intuitive backup system you can decide how you approach securing your data for the future - you can install all the features, select just the components you need, or if you prefer, choose not to use the software at all.
Automatic, Continuous Backup
A backup system that works as you do, running quietly in the background to protect your data using minimal PC resources. Whenever you add or change a file it's instantly backed up, so you can be safe in the knowledge that if the worst happens, your stored data will let you carry on from only moments before.
Password Protection for Privacy
Data privacy is a big concern for many people. Gain peace of mind knowing that your data is protected from unauthorised access with password protection and encryption.
My Book external drives are designed to save energy. WD GreenPower Technology™ lowers internal drive power consumption by up to 30%; a sleep mode reduces power during idle times, and a power-saving feature turns the drive on and off with your computer.

Initial impressions of the drive is that it is the exact same size as the previous Mybook. However, the difference is the new usb3 cable going into the drive has a flat head. Also the drive for the first time for along time comes with a u.k power plug. No more swapping out and clicking in the u.k plug for the European one or finding the u.k plug connector missing.
The drive i received was stated as been made in Thailand. The connectors were in line and the power on button though in the same place felt more solid clicking in. Hopefully the poor quality control of the drives in the old usb2 Mybook drives has been fixed with these new drives.
On powering on the drive a single light comes on which is a lot less distracting then the previous drives.
The drive has Smartware software on the drive but is not installed completely you must initiate it if it does not autorun.(Smartware is for backups, content gauge and password data protection. You can choose to install only the data password protection in the options separately without the other parts of the software if you want. The smartware software for Windows and Mac also includes a control to change the sleep time of the drive hibernation times which will be useful those who don't like the drive sleeping to quickly when idle.)
I use these Western Digital Green Drives for data storage backup for video, music and photos. So i did not install this. However you must click and install this software first, even if you don't want the software. It will give you the option to uninstall smartware on initalisation and will install the SES driver.Read more ›
There is backup software included with the drive if you want to use it. The drive was recognised by both XP and Windows 7 immediately and it runs cool. I had it on for a couple of days copying my collection over and there was no heat to speak of.
The only problem is that the unit is not silent. I have it sat next to a silent Shuttle XS35GT PC with an SSD and the My Book is noticeable. Not offensively noisy by any means but noticeable. It goes to sleep fairly quickly if you do not need it and then you have silence. Using the included management software you can set the inactive time to sleep mode. I have it set at 10 minutes which is the minimum.
Great product and I only wish I had some USB 3.0 hardware that would really let me take advantage of it.
I wanted everything in one place, as it would save USB ports and power supplies all being tied up at the same time. I've connected the 1TB drive to my TV via USB so I can watch all my AVI videos on it.
I also got the USB 3 pci card for £ to go with the unit. I transfered 930GB from the old USB2 drive in 13 hours which worked out at 1.2GB a minute, it probaly would have been faster if I did it folder by folder!
I transferred a 103Gb video folder to the drive in 1 hour, which worked out at 1.7GB a minute.
A sinlge 1GB video transfered in 27 secs which is 37MB per second.
The USB2 drive took 41 secs, 24MB sec (in both the USB2 & 3 ports).
A 1Gb picture folder with RAW/JPEG's transfered in 35 secs which is 28MB per second.
The USB2 drive took 53 secs, 19MB sec (USB3 port). and strangely 58 secs in the USB2 port.
Overall, I'm very happy with this 3TB hard drive, highly reccomended.
The drive itself is visually identical to the older My Book drives, indeed I have a 2tb My Book already which I purchased around a year ago. The older drive however does have one nice advantage - it has 4 lights on the front which give an idea how full the drive is. This new drive lacks these lights, and only has one small access LED which blinks when in use.
The drive also comes with WD's own backup solution, which is truly abysmally. It's clearly designed for idiots, as it is restricted to an automatic, cursory scan of your drives, which it then uses to choose which types of data it will back up. You have no option to actually tell it what to back up, or to look a little harder (it managed to miss my 1.5tb iTunes library in it's scan!). It's completely useless for all but the must ultra casual of user, but I have to wonder if users such as that would ever buy such a large drive. If you want to use this for back up then, find another software solution. (there are numerous free ones you can find online which are streets ahead of WD's effort).
A good drive then, but sadly bundled with atrocious back-up software.
