So...."The Book of Dad", on the face of it, looks doomed to join such tiresome tomes. But WAIT....I WAS WRONG...this one is actually VERY FUNNY INDEED. I'm not much given to laughing out loud, but reading this in the garden on a summer's afternoon, my guffaws must have had the neighbours wondering just what I was up to! Paul Barker has applied real thought and acute observation in the writing, with a deliciously off-centre humour that singles this book out from the horde.
There are many whimsical illustrations, some wonderfully acerbic summaries of types of Dads and a number of brilliant 'Dad' recipes: any such that includes '1 x Breville sandwich maker' in its list of ingredients is all right by me! "Diary of a Nobody" and "The Art of Coarse Rugby" were the funniest books I'd ever read and it's been 40 years since I closed them: but now, at last, here is a volume that's brought me just as much mirth and -what's more remarkable - has inspired me to write my first ever review!
