About the Author

In addition to writing The Book of Baseball Literacy and ebooks about baseball history and statistics, David Martinez has worked as a news reporter, college sports broadcaster, and advertising copywriter, but his biggest love has always been baseball. A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he reads extensively on the sport and owns an expansive baseball library. A California native, he received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and he now makes his home in San Jose with his wife and two young children.

Such books are always subjective because the author is the one who decides which player is worthy of inclusion, which books are worth raving about, which games are classics and which grounds are the greatest. I think Martinez gets it about right and manages to get plenty of digs in at Bud Selig along the way! Would recommend 100%

Excellent book even for a fairly enlightened Baseball nut like me who has a little more than a passing interest in the wonderful game, something for everyone and plenty of references to further books on Baseball history.
Recommended highly.

As an Englishman interested in Baseball this book is an absolute must.Such strange things as ERA and Base on Balls which to a Yank are second nature are explained. The amount of info on all aspects of the game is astounding. Difficult to put down.

Any one in the UK interested in baseball should have this on their book shelf. But include some 'fun' baseball books on that shelf, investigate "baseballUK" and let me know if you are a SF Giants fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Background 14 Mar. 2013
By johnac1981 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
What I liked about this book is its fairly succinct history of the highlights of the game. I never took the time to learn the history and legends of the game even if I love baseball and this book helped give me the feeling I could hang with the best of them at a sports bar, at least when a baseball game is on the screen. It breaks the game into historical background, legendary players, and all the tidbits you need to make it sound like you know of what you speak. Recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a Grand Slam! (touch em all!) 10 Oct. 2016

I bought the third edition of one of my favorite baseball books because I didn't know how not to! This is an easy read as the author clearly has a broad knowledge of baseball, its history and its importance to culture. But it is also so incredibly educational I bet ANY baseball fan will learn something new if they read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction 5 Mar. 2013
By Henri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is what its title suggests - a kind of primer on professional baseball, with sections on historically important figures, statistics, ballparks, terminology, etc. Martinez is not shy about making judgments and advancing opinions, but he's sound on the whole. It's an easy, interesting read for a long-time fan, but its real value is for a newcomer to fandom. You should know, however, that it doesn't really present the basic rules of the game systematically - it's more background information on major league baseball.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baseball Diehards 3 Feb. 2013
By david schau - Published on Amazon.com

Find a quiet spot, get a cold drink and thumb through this compendium of baseball lore. There will be a requisite number of "Wow", "I didn't know that!" "Oh My". The diehard won;t read it. The diehard will savor it.
