A great CD. Has all the classic boogie woogie tracks on it played extremely well by Axel Zwingengerger who is the one of the top boogie woogie players in the world today. Great recordings and great playing at a great price. Highly recommended listening

5.0 out of 5 stars Axel's Boogie Woogie 20 Nov. 2002
By Dr J S Tindal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you enjoy Boogie Woogie, this album is a must. Axel plays a representative range of classical titles and has a lightness of touch which is rare. His variations on a theme are a delight, especially his 10 minute masterpiece version of 'Roll 'Em Pete'.
Buy this CD while it is still available, or forever regret not doing so!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does The Masters Proud. 22 April 2013
By musotto - Published on Amazon.com

Unless you are significantly emotionally inhibited or just plain emotionally defective then Boogie Woogie is a style of music that won't fail to move you.

Digressing for a moment, I believe that there are too many people who call themselves "music lovers" with little justification. I have encountered such self-professed music lovers only to discover that their interest in music is severely limited. For instance, the guy who only listened to Wagner. That was it, no other classical music in his collection, let alone jazz, rock, pop, etc. I'm certainly not knocking Wagner (I own the very rare large prestige box set of the complete Ring Cycle in vinyl). My huge collection of recordings has very large rock and popular sections, a huge section of operatic music (in vinyl) as well as a very large classical section. I was a professional rock and blues guitarist and singer in my youth. So with all that I am confident that I qualify as a genuine music lover.

Therefore I assert that if you are genuinely "a music lover" and have any significant leaning towards blues and rock then you will greatly appreciate this recording, made in 1991 in Hamburg, Germany by a youthful Axel Zwingenberger. Boogie Woogie is the very foundation of blues and rock in my opinion.

I own almost all the vintage Boogie Woogie recordings one would want to have (some on 78s). The recording quality of most of those original performances leaves a lot to be desired when one is used to modern fidelity. Quite a few of these original recordings were made before the era of electric recording, so the performance had to be modified to suit the acoustic recording techniques of the time. Imagine what those pioneers of Boogie Woogie would sound like if they could have recorded their famous performances with modern fidelity. Well......, wonder no more. Axel's musical timing and capability for expression in this genre are superb, the quality of the instrument he is playing is also superb and the recording quality leaves nothing to be desired. This keeps even the longest pieces on this recording interesting.

There is so much revealed about the original compositions on a recording like this. This CD includes one of Axel's originals as well as his arrangement of Swanee River in Booggie Woogie style (Which is a real treat). Yes, there are other modern Boogie Woogie piano players whose performances are very satisfying, and I encourage you to make your own explorations. I simply suggest that you can't go wrong with this particular recording.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs a better piano!!! 25 April 2014

None of the oldtime boogie players ever used a Bosendorfer piano to play. It sounds cheap and very dull in the bass notes (the very essence of the boogie woogie misic.) Tell Axel to buy and restore a real good upright and then he will have something really nice.
