What Boogie Pop Phantom does have is atmosphere, and lots of it. It's also hugely unsettling, the storylines highly original and the animation always of a high standard. Strangely, each one of the 13 episodes focus on a different character, all of whom are somehow related.
The three episodes on this disc are all very strange and all would absolutely terrify children. Mysterious deaths? Check. A guy that pulls bugs out of people and eats them? Check. You need a lot of patience for this show - if you're looking for mecha, action, gunfights and sexy women in revealing outfits then this isn't for you. But for those that like to use your brain and want a good confusing horror anime, then I recommend this. You could watch a lot worse.
episode 3, "life can be so nice" is my favourite of the whole series. sadly its the most gory and sad so far, but soon enought in this series you get used to that! well worth a watch!
While it retains the sense of unease that pervaded the first three episodes, this Evolution 2 is a little slower-paced than the first DVD with less emphasis on disturbing imagery and more on plot development. An anti-filler DVD, if you will.
It's a little hard to write a review of a DVD like this, as the only people who'll be interested in it are likely to be those who've already seen the first: and therefore know what to expect.
As such, I'll keep this short: basically, if you didn't like the first DVD this certainly isn't going to change your mind about the series as it maintains all the standards from it (including the graphical style and usage of sound so slightly influenced by Serial Experiments Lain), but if you like your horror to be more cerebral (and confusing), and not about zombies, gore or sex, then this might be just what you've been looking for.
Clever, disturbing and dark, Boogiepop Phantom: Evolution 2 is a must for fans of the first DVD... just expect to come out of it hungry for the third, as the mystery of Boogiepop is still far from being solved by the end of this set!
