The foam fills it up as soon as the canister is screwed on, but the foam will only be released from the nozzle when you pull on the easily controlled trigger. The ball-shaped valve on the end of the trigger rod is very good and almost nothing escapes it. But don't leave the canister fitted for long periods (weeks? months?) after the job is finished because eventually it will lose all its pressure, since the seals on the gun are not perfect.
Both shapes of plastic nozzles are fiddly to fit over the valve outlet when cold, but it is much easier after using a cup of hot water to warm and soften the relevant bit of plastic. They do split after a while, and I found that reinforcing the split tube by a few turns of gaffer tape was a good way of continuing to be able to use it when it failed in the middle of the work.
It is desirable to purge the gun and nozzles with some gun cleaner immediately after removing the empty foam canister, and a typical cleaner can should last for many purges. Being 'metal' the gun will survive the foam setting in it and then being cleaned out again the hard way by dismantling it, but purging with the aerosol cleaner in place of the foam canister is so much quicker and easier.
Make sure you buy the 'gun grade' foam and cleaner with the correct screw fitting. There are several different types around and only the correct shape will do, I made sure by going to the builders merchants. These from Az should also work;

If you have ever used expanding foam you will know the sort of sticky mess one usually gets, the aerosols are usually uncontrollable, and when finished any leftovers are usually thrown away.
I stumbled on a foam gun recently and decided to get one, what a revelation the gun is, its so much more controllable than the aerosols, foaming is now a clean and pleasant task, and the gun can be put away still attached to the foam container ready to used next time, if the container is empty, clean the gun with foam gun cleaner before you put it away.
I bought this because I wanted control over the foam.
It didn't disappoint.
Fits the Screwfix tin and if you buy the cleaner it makes a good job returning the gun to new condition which allows for future use.
This gun is half the price of the Screwfix gun.
This is much much cheaper and frankly - simple - easy to keep clean - easy to lock off - easy to fit into small spaces - The BEST i've ever had to date. May even buy another - so we have one on the van and one in the workshop.
TIP ! having gummed up two previous guns - always squirt the end of the gun nozzle after use with cleaner and wipe/rub with fine steel wool. If it look "brand new" then it is clean and WILL operate next time you use it ! And don't take the unused foam can off until it is empty (otherwise the foam can won't work when refitted a few weeks later !!!!)
