Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win the war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians have only recently begun to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague, Chris Everitt, were the first to compile a complete review of all the raids and the background stories to this fascinating campaign. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries, on the effects of the raids. Little of this material had been published previously, and never before had the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way.The Bomber Command War Diaries has become the standard basic work of reference on this extraordinary campaign. This edition includes retrospective observations and a new appendix.

I had a relative who was shot down over Germany during WW2 and knew nothing about him. I bought this book to discover more. Indeed, I found his mission documented. His was the only bomber of 14 that didn’t return from a nighttime mission. He was 28. This is a hefty book, numbering almost 800 pages. Every nighttime and daytime mission is here together with type and number of aircraft, targets and losses. Information has been obtained from local archives in Germany and Italy and the occupied countries, so we read of the success, or otherwise, of the bombing. I’m up to page 220 (November 1941) and intend to finish it, in part out of respect to those hundreds of young men on both sides, who lost their lives. The losses were appalling. The bravery unbelievable.

Interesting and detailed but incomplete. For instance the Aalborg raid in 1940 where the ENTIRE attacking force- 11 Blenheims- was shot down, is not mentioned.
The digital edition had non existent or incompetent proof reading (I can't comment on the printed book.)
There are multiple decimal points missing in loss statistics . For example 7 July to 10 November 1941 it states that 71 percent of aircraft dispatched were lost when it should read 7.1 ( seven point one). Whatever system was used to digitalise the book was not fit for purpose. It can't cope with "10" or "110" referring to "no Wellingtons" May 4 1943 instead of 110 and "io Mosquitoes" on June 22 1944 instead of 10 and there are multiple other examples

Replacing a lost volume, I was astounded that such a fine copy was sold at this low price. I recommend the book itself to anyone with an interest in the bombing raids in WW2 or those who like intricate detail in documents used for research

This book is Excellent ..a MUST for anyone researching Bomber Command..I am very satisfied with the content the book covers ...a record day by day of Bomber Command Operations as well as information on Squadrons etc...I personaly have only one change to the records of the Raids that I would have liked to have seen and that is while in some cases it gives how many aircraft and types took part and were lost ...I feel it would just finish it off if the I.D. Numbers of the Squadrons..HCU...OTU,s etc that took part had been also included in the day by day record of operations...I feel this is a major oversight ...and would have made the book complete .... Still one to have though ...

I am researching my family history and my grandfather flew Lancaster's during the war. This is a fantastic resource to help understand the background to what he would have experienced.

The book was a little bit more worn than expected, but the information contained within is brilliant. As my father was in Bomber Command during WW2, it is of interest to compare his logbook with the details in this volume
