For this book, Chris Ransted has researched some of the lesser known events and personalities relating to the early years of Explosive Ordnance Disposal in the UK. Daring acts of cold blooded bravery, and ingenuity in the face of life threatening technical challenges, are recounted throughout the book. Included are numerous previously unpublished accounts and photographs that describe the disarming of German bombs, parachute mines, and even allied bombs found at aircraft crash sites. In addition, the book contains the most comprehensive account ever published of the Home Guard s role with the Auxiliary Bomb Disposal Units, and details of conscientious objector s involvement with unexploded bombs. This is not only a valuable research tool for serious researchers already well read on the subject, but also a fascinating read for those with no previous knowledge of wartime bomb disposal at all, and of course a must read for anyone interested in the subject.

As with the two previous publications by Chris Ransted, this is an excellent and very well researched book. As I have said in a previous review of this author, bomb disposal operations during World War 2 is a very much neglected area, and it is thanks to him that these stories of technical innovation, bravery, and often the loss of life, has been told. The book has many illustrations, and covers little known subjects, such as the role of the Home Guard and conscientious objectors in bomb disposal work.

What a fantastic book! If you are interested in anything to do with the second world war this is a must read. An invaluable insite into what the unsung heros of bomb disposal had to deal with. Now looking for more books on this little known side of such tragic events on home soil.

It's not a bad read and has some useful info in it but lacks technical detail. It does have information in it relating to the Home Guard Auxiliary EOD units which I had not seen much of before.
