What a treat! I've just finished reading the last page & what a great last page it was!

The book kept me engrossed throughout. Brilliantly written.

Makes you wonder what people are capable of when struck with one emotional thump after another.

There are areas in the read where you're holding your breathe willing Julian to succeed in his escape & just when you think he's made it through by the skin of his teeth the author hits you with another gripping dilemma threatening capture.
It's all very tense & exciting stuff drawing you right there into the story with him.

Switching back & forth from before the tragedy to the aftermath worked extremely well. Just the right amount of pages worth for you loose yourself in each story without feeling liked you're being jarred from one to the other & loose interest.

I've had this on my kindle a while, almost a year. Had I've known what a cracking story was within i would have started it immediately. Unfortunately this is what happens when you download a handful of free books together. Still the joy of finding it randomly while seeking a fresh read has enriched my last 24hrs.

A fine piece of writing & unusual but thrilling read. Recommended.

Julian loses 5 members of his family in a hit and run. His wife, 2 children and his parents are all killed when a van runs into them on the pavement. The driver cannot be found or any forensic evidence. Julian is obviously distraught. He has a PhD and works in a scientific lab which gave him a quality of life, but now feels his time at this is over. Life has changed and even before this the pressures of work are not for him.
I won’t give anything away as this is not quite what you expect from this learned man having read the first few pages. Then again, preparation is everything as is forethought. This is such a well described book that you can picture Julian on his “adventure”. From sitting on a rock looking out into the Peak district or to sitting in the pub getting the worse for wear with an old school friend. One loose comment that he remembers weeks later has set off a chain of events to change things irreparably. I devoured this book and like a good wine it slipped down very easily. You sympathise with Julian’s loss, admire his planning but wonder what has gone on in his mind whilst simultaneously thinking “would another person do that?” I don’t want to give anything away so can’t say too much other than give this a go- you won’t be disappointed.

I loved this book, fast moving, easy to read, 100 miles an hour, I was on the edge of my seat. I finished it in a day and was having withdrawal symptoms so read The Magpies , recommended at the end of the book, this was also a great book.

I felt a bit let down by the ending, but otherwise I found the storyline gripping and the twists surprising. All through, my sympathy was with Julian, however the first twist did change my mind to a degree. I just wish there had been more explanation about the ending, it seemed too sudden after the in depth description of his previous 6 months. I have given it 5 stars, because I did enjoy the book otherwise, and it was well written.

I have posted an interview with A J Oates at: http://stevek1889.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/interview-with-j-oates-author-of-bolt.html

There can't be many better value ways to spend an evening on your own than a couple of beers and Bolt-hole on your Kindle for 77p. It is a hard book to review without giving too much away and risking spoiling it. Suspense builds very quickly and is maintained so that once you are a few pages in there is never any question of not making it to the end. And, of all the things, you find yourself rooting for a brutal murderer! Full review at: http://stevek1889.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/sheffield-novels.html

99% of the story is excellent, however, I felt that the author had reached a maximum word limit, and brought the story to an abrupt end. Perhaps i was just enjoying it too much? I'm sure that there wsa another few chapters left unwritten in this one, but, nonetheless, it's a fascinating read, and something you'll find hard to put down.

A story of a normal family man who life has been turned upside down by a comment made in a chance meeting with an old schoolfriend and then driven to murder by the consequences of this. This was a meeting that he would regret for the rest of his life and this was difficult to put down as you follow all the twists and turns to the end. Well written but easy to read

Downloaded this freebie a few months ago and absolutely loved this fast moving book. Could not put it down and read it in a day it just kept forcing me to read more and more and kept me gripped from the very first page until the end and wow what an amazing ending, never saw that one coming.

Cannot believe this is A.J. Oates' first novel, can thoroughly recommend and I am looking forward to the next one.
