This book was really too far fetched to be a good read. I know it's not real but there should be a certain element of realism when dealing with a subject such as this. The 'body reader' escapes after being held captive for three years, gets to her old house and is rejected by her boyfriend so runs off. The boyfriend doesn't even go after her or contact the police. After running across town to the police station she used to work at (surely she wouldn't even be able to stand after all that time with no exercise and being practically starved?) nobody believes she is who she says she is at first. Anyway, she ends up going back to work as a detective having had no counselling or getting any help to find somewhere to live etc etc. she's amazingly unscathed by the whole kidnap victim experience, suffering no ill effects apart from her hair turning white. I read the whole book to see if it improved but the ending was just as silly as the beginning. There are far better books of this genre available, I can't really recommend this one.

From the very start this book is so good . You start with the victim trapped in a small room with all hope gone. It picks up really fast . The absolute horror she has endured is unbelievable and terrible. I won't give the story away but it's well worth a read .

I got his as a 99p read and after reading a couple of the more negative reviews decided the good outweighed the bad and I would give it a go.

I must say , I really did enjoy this book. the story keeps you gripped from the start, the heroine being kidnapped and held prisoner for 3 years, escapes and what follows is her trying to rebuild her life including going back to the same job in the police force.

yes I agree its far fetched, but its fiction ( hell I read enough not vampire stories to ignore far fetched!!) the return to work is approx. 4 months after her escape but she does not return in her right mind, we see her struggle to hold it together in the face of the crimes she is investigating, the disappearance of young girls.
in fact all her colleagues especially her new partner, have doubts about her sanity so its not the case she goes back to work and all is good.
its a good murder mystery with enough red herrings thrown in to put you off the scent of the real culprit.
the end is satisfying - no cliffhangers and I confess I searched in case this was one of a series which I would have liked.
all in all well written , entertaining enough to read in one sitting.

I gave the 4 stars as I reserve 5 stars for books I can read over and over again :)

I don't really like mysteries all that much but as I started to read this book it was so interesting that I had to continue. Jude was kidnapped and held for three years before she escaped. She was a detective in Homicide and when she was cleared eventually fit for. Duty she went back into Homicide again. First day on the job she and her partner had what was supposed to be a suicide but Jude, living in the dark for three years and feeling and sensing things knew that it was a murder. Slowly all sort of cases in respect of missing girls turned up and in spite of evidence weighing against her she began to piece together the evidence to solve all the murders. You must read this, it's brilliant.

I really loved this book, I was hooked from the start. The story line unfolds and keeps the suspence going to the end. The character of Jude, who has been held a prisoner for three years is well drawn and believable. The book shows how easy it is to ignore and distort the words of a child in a difficult situation. Uriah is another well drawn character. I would love to see a second book to see how things work out in Minneapolis. Would be a good series.

This story is difficult to read because of what the women go through, but it is well worth the discomfort. It makes you question how people can be so easily fooled by a person in authority with charming manners. Yet it also restores your faith in someone's ability to overcome and get on with life. It is a really good story, well told and has you on the edge of your seat.

I liked the title and expected to enjoy the book. I was surprised by how much I did. Characters who convinced me and a good strong story line with enough twists to have me hooked.
