The Bodi-Tek SAD Light has been developed to help Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition which can affect all ages, men and women alike. Symptoms vary, and are often referred to as the “winter blues”. The lack of natural light at any time of the year may cause SAD. The Bodi-Tek SAD Light is a medically certified light box to use when treating the symptoms of SAD, which may include: change in appetite or weight, lack of energy, diminishing sex drive, body aches or pains, low self-esteem, sleep problems, loss of memory, inability to make decisions, depression/mood swings, llack of concentration/interest.

Blue Spectrum Light

Most SAD lights produce white with a spectrum of 450 nm to 700 nm. Blue spectrum light is light in the 450 nm to 500 nm part of the spectrum.

Recent studies have indicated that SAD lights using blue spectrum light technology may be more effective at treating of the symptoms of SAD as you need less light. This makes the comparison with older light box technology confusing, as lower levels of output can be equally effective.

The Bodi-Tek SAD Light peaks at 460 nm in the blue spectrum, potentially making it more effective than those using older technology but with higher lux levels.

At source, the Bodi-Tek SAD Light produces over 10,000 lux. Placing the lamp 30c m away will provide +2500 lux – making it ideal for use on your desk or next to where you reading or working.

How to Use SAD Light

Simply position the Bodi-Tek SAD Light about 30 cm away from you, directing the light towards your face, but slightly offset. Adjust the timer and brightness to suit. (It is OK to look into the light every now and then, but do not look into the light continuously). Typically 15-60 minutes of exposure a day is sufficient for most people, however, you may use your light as often as you want.

Top Tip
  • Try to co-ordinate usage with your natural biological clock, namely between 6am and 8pm
  • You can obviously use the Bodi-Tek SAD Light at other times of the day, but research has shown that morning use is most beneficial
  • Use the Bodi-Tek SAD LIGHT on at least five successive days at roughly the same time, you can then repeat the programme as often as you feel you need to

Using the Advanced Settings

How to use

By pressing the Mode button briefly you can scroll through the modes.
Any adjustments you make will be automatically saved.

When setting your preferences, if the unit is left idle for five seconds it will save any changes made, but it will no longer be in the Advanced Settings mode.

Mode 1: Setting Brightness

Pressing the Mode button once select the “Brightness Setting” mode.
The left LED will flash. Alter the initial brightness setting by pressing the + or – buttons to increase /decrease the brightness.

Mode 2: Setting the Timer

Pressing the Mode button a second time will select the timer function. The centre LED will flash. Use the + and – buttons to adjust the time.
The six central LEDs indicate the ‘on’ time in 10 minute increments from 10–60 minutes. When the seventh LED flashes, this sets the unit to run continuously.

Mode 3: Setting Fade In/Out

Pressing the mode button a third time allows you to adjust the time taken to reach your selected brightness and fade out at the end of a timed session.
The right LED will flash. Press the + and – buttons to increase/decrease the fade time (up to a maximum of six minutes). This time is indicated by the six central LEDs. If you do not require the Fade Mode please select the 7th LED.

Please note that this option is not available if the ‘run continuously’ setting has been selected in Mode Two. To finish, either leave the unit for five seconds or press the mode button again. The settings and timings are for your convenience and do not alter the treatment.

This is my first SAD lamp. I feel like it helps. Up close, it's extremely bright, even on the dimmest setting. Seems to work well though, even if placed across the room. I chose it because it was cheaper than a lot of the others. I thought I might regret that. Actually, I'm really pleased with the less expensive option.

I'm one of those people who will try anything to beat the winter blues and after seeing this SAD light, brought one ASAP. At the time there wasn't many reviews but really the only thing I need to say is 'it works'. You can adjust the luminence so it's dimmed, or very bright. You can also adjust the amount of time it stays on before switching itself off, or it can be left on permanently until you turn it off again. So, imagine you're on your PC right now, surfing or Facebooking, and this bright light shining at you...what could be easier? Just give it a few days to start working. I have mine on for hours at a time.

This lamp is fantastic, Its only small but is very bright and it really works. You can alter the brightness which is really good. The lamp is very well priced as others seem to do the same job for alot more. I would recommed it to anyone who suffers from depression or seasonal disorders it has helped me alot. You can just leave it on as a lamp in the room and let it work as you get on with your daily routines.

The dispatch was really good I ordered the item and received it two days later very well packaged and I would use Amazon again.

I have had this SAD light for 3 years now. I was desperate as each winter I would struggle to get out of bed no matter how much sleep I had and I would feel lethargic all day & sit drinking coffee in the office trying to wake myself up. I did't feel depressed or anything, just tired.

This is just brilliant. I use it in the darker months for 20mins or so a day and it just completely revitalises me. It "feels like summer" all year round. Very, very pleased with product & shocked that it actually does work.

** EDIT**

Due to the confusion I seem to have caused for one or two people, I feel I should update this review to take certain things into consideration.

This listing was COMPLETELY different at the time of my review just over a year ago, it now contains more information and the correct brand name for the lamp on display at the top of the page. In fact if you read my review, you will see I quote the description given at the time of my review, this is no longer on the page.....

The reviews on this page could be for either of two lamps....perhaps even more over the time period....who knows! Certainly there was another product on amazon at the time sharing the exact same reviews.

My original review (below)was merely to provide information which the page (at the time) did not. If this is the same lamp as I was sent, the information given on the box should be the same re the lux:distance

***ORIGINAL REVIEW***

Firstly I will explain the title as I find this pretty misleading. Firstly The lamp is labelled as the RIO SAD lamp, at the time of my purchase the pic is of a black lamp, oval-ish in shape with three buttons on the front and the word/s Bodi-Tek. I assumed this was a branch of RIO or perhaps a logo they use on these lights. The truth is this lamp is nothing to do with RIO from what I can tell on the box...I have not even opened it yet (and may not) because the box does tell you the next complaint I have....however, there is another retailer on amazon selling this lamp with this description and sharing these reviews and the picture is of a white rectangular light which looks like it is a flat box like maybe a dvd case. This is why I ask "Which lamp is everyone actually reviewing?"

On to my next complaint....

I have considered getting a SAD light for some time. I have been deterred by the sky high prices. I am pleased to have paid a sensible price (circa £40) in this instance.

So, winter has set in, in gloomy, rainy London. I have moved into a large room with a horrible tube light, that makes my head hurt. There is also a "regular" bulb lamp, but they aren't great either ; it produce a horrible yellow/orange light, that's weak.

I have used some duct tape to attach it to the wall near my desk, above eye-level. (It's quite light so it duct tape works just fine. It's above eye level as it (obviously) hurts your eyes if you look straight at it. It's actually an incredibly good simulation of daylight. The range is pretty small though, so probably I'm going to get another one to illuminate another corner of my room.

I wish I had bought one of these much, much sooner.

I have suffered from S.A.D for many years and use a full-size fluorescent light-box at home. However as I work shifts I have often thought I should boost my exposure to blue light by taking a smaller light with me to work. It was a good idea, but unfortunately I chose wrongly with this item. My first reaction on receiving this lamp was its poor quality, it was like something you would expect out of Pound-Stretcher! Clearly most of the asking price goes on the l.e.d's. And my experience of this lamp has led me to the conclusion that l.e.d's are not ideal for the treatment of S.A.D. One problem is that l.e.d's are seemingly bright only because they emit a very narrow beam of light and clustering several together does not improve matters. Think in terms of a search-light and you have got the picture. So forget the picture of being bathed in a lovely bright glow in which you have some freedom of moment. The reality with this lamp is that you have to position your eyes exactly within the confines of the narrow beam and stay there, move a few inches side to side or up and down, and the brightness is gone. Not only that but the quality of the light is harsh and metallic. And once you have fixed yourself in position, don't be tempted to look directly at the l.e.d's for more than moment or you will get a set of spots in your vision that correspond to the pattern of the l.e.d's. All in all I have not found this lamp to be comfortable or practical to use. As I have access to an accurate light meter at work, I decided to check the actual intensity of light emitted by this lamp at the recommended distance of 0.50metre. Surprisingly it measured only in the region of 1000 lux, the same as a 20watt compact fluorescent bulb or equivalent 100watt incandescent bulb.Read more ›
