Well Bob Monkhouse the King of the quiz shows. Reading the other review yes you may be disappointed but only with disc 3 as it clearly says 'best of'so contains clips from the other two which does make you wonder why? especially when Bob released some great TV 'an audience with'. The first two shows are fantastic the DVD 'Bob Monkhouse Exposes Himself' is worth the money alone I had this on VHS for years just waiting for it's DVD release. Sadly I had to wait for his untimely death before that came to be. 'Live And Forbidden' ok yes filmed in same place but show is so different you have to understand stand up comedy & their routines to know why they may appear familar. If you just played discs 1 & 2 you be happy enough I'm sure. You either loved Bob's work or you didn't. As a lover of great comedy I see Bob as at the top the one guy all others looked up too. His quick fast wit, expressions, just the way he held everyone in the palm of his hands throughout his show put simply Bob is a one off & this set should stand proud in anyone's collection for what it is. A bit of history of the great man at work.

Bob Monkhouse was an excellent comedian and must have a wealth of material. I have followed him over the years, and when I saw this DVD set I thought great, must treat myself to this. Now having watched all three discs, I wondered why the second and third discs were nearly the same as the first one, but with a slight variation of material towards the end.

The shows were recorded at the same venue, which I was not aware of before making my purchase. It begs the question why did the producers put out three similar discs? To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement.

Bob Monkhouse was one of the truly great comics that Britain ever produced. In his later years, he enjoyed a bit of a comeback as people rediscovered the comic genius that had become lost behind as his game show host side took prominence. You only have to look at his truly sublime topical monologues on the National Lottery show to realise how good he was. Especially the one where his autocue failed and ad-libbed a totally new (and equally topical) routine from the top of his head.

Tragically, these DVDs show Bob at his worst. As so often happens with comedians, you take away TV's requirement to keep things clean, and he quickly stoops into the realm of lazy smutty jokes, few of which are remotely funny. Reportedly he was told that stand up videos only sold if they weren't certificate 18, and so he simply delivers what it takes to achieve that. For goodness' sake, he even brings on a stripper in the middle of each set. It's grim stuff indeed.

Worse still, having been advertised as a 3 disc set, it turns out the third disc contains a compilation of "highlights" from the first 2 discs. It's mind-bogglingly pointless. I'd much rather see a compilation of Bob's many TV appearances, where at least he was "forced" to use his own inventiveness, rather than a string of below-par smutty gags.

I'm giving it 2 stars, because there is the odd glimpse of Bob's brilliance - quickly reminiscing of his time on The Golden Shot and Family Fortunes, and his charmingly "innocent" reaction to the crowd's enthusiasm for the strippers, but really, this is not the way I wanted to remember a true giant of comedy. Come on somebody, do the great man proud.

There was always something slightly cheesy about Bob's act, censored or not. I forgave him then and I forgive him now. Perhaps, no definitely!, it's a reaction to the PC culture, but watching someone like Bob or Mike Reid (God rest them both) let off the leash now seems wonderfully liberating. Any comedian worthy of the name will tell you, it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Bob was urbane and debonair, especially in later life, and whatever you think of this material, he brings to it the unique style that I dearly miss. I would welcome more collections of his appearances, clean or otherwise. He could give masterclasses to the new-age comedians.

Yes, disc 3 is a mix of the other 2. Okay then, watch disc one here, disc two there, and disc three when you can't make up your mind. I've owned the set a few months, and still pull it out every now and again. My case comes up on Thursday.
