This book is an absolute must for any wildlife art enthusiast, whether you appreciate more represenational 'photographic' portrayals, or sway on the side of looser impressionistic ideals. Bob Kuhns mastery of sketching in the field is fully explored and explained with hundreds of examples, alongside his own influences. It gives the viewer an insight into not only how productive he was in his sketches, but also how fluid and technically adept he was at capturing each individual species with a quick gestural line. Many of these sketches are sat alongside paintings that were then worked up from his initial ideas, with comment from himself and other artists who knew him well. Several images I have not seen before, Kuhns striking large bold blocks of colour and light being ever present, his paintings are full of energy and joy at the process of painting itself which is sometimes lost on many of todays tight realism based wildlife painters. This is a timeless and wonderful selection of an artist fully absorbed in the natural world, cracking :)

A wonderful book, on one of the great artist of our time Bob Kuhn. I have three other books by this artist, and this one goes deep into how and why Bob Kuhn made his art work. It covers much more than just his paintings, and gives us an insight in to them via his sketches. It is said that behind every great painting, is a great drawing, but we rarely get to see them. Now we do, and there is so much we can learn for this master of art.
Love the book. Love the artist.

I have been trying to get my hands on a book of Bob Kuhn's work for several years. The man is a legend, and Since his death in 2007 I had thought I would never get the longed for book as his previous books have only been available in the US and prices rocket. However, this monster of a book (it is big and heavy) is a real delight. I have only just received it, so just skimmed through, but have been really pleased with what I have seen so far. Although Bob painted wildlife, he painted the raw tooth and claw moments, and these spring with life from the pages. An added delight is the inclusion of so many pencils sketches, and again these are full of life. This book is a worthy tribute to an artist with a distinct and vibrant style and I am very happy to add it to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars KUHN WAS A MASTER 2 Oct. 2012
By A Reader From Southern California - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I bought this book after seeing the Bob Kuhn exhibit, Bob Kuhn: Drawing on Instinct. This book is amazing as it not only shows plenty of Kuhn's paintings but also many of his drawings and thumbnail sketches that were used in the creation of a painting. Drawing and a sense of design is what set this wildlife artist apart from the thousands of other wildlife artists who simply trace down photographs and render the facts and scientific exactitude without having a sound knowledge of draftsmanship and constructive anatomy. Kuhn's drawings are the under pinnings for his epic paintings and this book shows plenty of them. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in GREAT animal painting and draftsmanship.

Nothing like seeing into the mind of the artist through his (brilliant) drawings. A long overdue and very well produced book.

I am impressed with the in-depth analysis of Bob Kuhn's work and career. This book explores and explains Kuhn's work relative to contemporaries and the art community as a whole. The plates of his studies and completed works are impressive. This is more than just another picture book.
