Just to chip in with an alternative view of this album to the previous two reviews. It would appear that Willie Nelson fans are not too impressed with this recording. Perhaps they do not appreciate the fine jazz being played here. In my opinion this is a superb record, lovers of Hoagy Carmichael will certainly enjoy it. Relaxed, with top class musicians including of course the finest living jazz trumpeter in the world today. If your musical taste is limited to simple folk blues, avoid it. If however you want to add some fine laid back jazz to your collection with some gentle singing from Nelson don't be put off.

I bet this was a fantastic live show - shame it sounds so flat on the CD!

Unlike the other reviewer I came to this recording as a fan of Willie Nelson. I think Willie sounds pretty good on the whole - I just wish there was a bit more of him! His regular harmonica buddy, Mickey Raphael, is the real star of the show for me - his soloes shine above everyone else!

The first two tracks, "Bright Lights, Big City", and Willie's own "Night Life", are the highlights for me. The lowest points being the two tracks associated with Hank Williams ("My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" and "Nobody's Business"), which, for me, don't seem to work in this jazz setting.

All in all, it's not a terrible album but certainly not one that will much play from me!

I was put off buying this by poor reviews. But having just purchased it now it's cheap I have to admit it's a good disc. I am struggling to understand the critics who claim this sounds flat. In my car I enjoy it as a good sing along, at home on my hi fi it really turns into a bit of a tour de force of consummate jazz blues. I can understand Willie Dixon fans being a bit taken aback this is him singing live blues when he is getting on a bit, but as a talking blues artist he has to be viewed as a bit of a star. Wynton's band are absolutely immaculate in their playing, and as there is no way you could play free jazz etc here how could they be criticized ! This disc puts me in mind of the excellent skiffle disc that I have by Van Morrison , it reminds you of where what we listen to came from and reminds you of how even relatively simple music forms when played by consummate musicians are awesome.

Marsalis and Nelson - not the obvious partnership but it works. Marsalis and his band display the relaxed competence of seasoned professionals and carry the album - Nelson is, well Nelson. His voice has always seemed to me to be more a frog than a nightingale and at times it is stretched beyond its comfort zones on this album but the phrasing and heart are all there. Some tracks work better than others but the live feel of the recording shines through and gives it a warmth.

What a superb rendition of the blues - Marsalis manages this beautifully, effortlessly avoiding repetition. Loved his arrangement of the songs - especially Georgia". Willie Nelson's whispery vocals and deft acoustic guitar solos are a great contrast to the band's energetic playing.

Listen out as well for Mickey Raphael's harp playing - top drawer

This has to be the best £12 I have spent in a long time. Marsalis' trumpet playing sublime, whilst Nelsons' guitar playing (he's not the best guitarist in the world) adds a rustic touch. All in all a cracking album.
