Peggy Lee had recorded numerous concept albums during the course of her career, but few were quite as intriguing as Blues Cross Country, originally released in 1961. With the orchestra arranged and conducted by Quincy Jones (who also co-wrote a number of the album's twelve tracks), Peggy conducts a musical tour across the United States, visiting old standards such as Basin Street Blues and St Louis Blues, alongside specially created numbers such as The Train Blues and Boston Beans. Whilst a somewhat short album (the total running time was just under half an hour, something of the norm for albums released at the end of the 1950s and early 1960s), the mix of Quincy's brassy arrangements and Peggy's vocal make it a compelling album.
Top Customer Reviews
Peggy co-wrote about half the songs here, the remainder being covers of classics songs sometimes re-interpreted by Peggy - so even these songs may not sound quite as you might expect, but everything here is brilliant. The songs mix swinging up-tempo songs with tender ballads. The musicians include some of the finest west coast jazzmen then available - Frank Rosolino, Jack Sheldon, Al Porcino, Bill Perkins, Jimmy Rowles and Benny Carter.
It is hard to pick highlights from an album of such outstanding quality, so I won't. From the opening Kansas City to the closing The shining sea (one of two bonus tracks), this is an album of never-ending delights recorded by a lady at the peak of her powers.
I love the voice and the treatment of the songs here and would give 5 stars, but when you buy a product that leaves you short you are disappointed hence only 3 stars on this rating.
