Fans of Blue Murder will welcome this terrific adaptation of the very first story in the popular and highly successful TV series. Like all of Staincliffe's novels, it weaves the complexities of family life skilfully with the complex and often gut-churning reality of criminal investigation. Staincliffe's deep understanding of, and empathy with, children adds an extra dimension to the police procedural.
Despite being Pregnant, having troubled children and abandoned by her husband, the newly promoted Janine Lewis has to balance all the demands on her time as well as being able to prove she can still find the murderer... Concerned that she will be perceived as not being up to her job, Janine begins to doubt her gut instinct and becomes wary of the motives of those around her - can she see the clues that there and get to the truth?
This book strikes just the right balance between setting the scene to the Murder, adding twists and turns as the story develops and building background to the characters. By doing this Cath Staincliff has written a story with is gripping and will keep you guessing to the end.
I enjoyed this story, I hadn't seen the television series but may now hunt it out. The characters at times felt a bit too 2 dimensional but that could be simply because this is the first book in a series.
This is an absolutely cracking read, fast paced, absolutely believable and deals with the lot of the single working mother in a totally realistic manner. I loved this DCI and found myself rooting for her against her stupid boss. Well we have all been there haven't we?
Janine has just been made up to DCI or Chief Inspector of Police a role she has slaved for and coveted for so long she can taste it and she damn well deserves it. Of course she is opposed and her husband isn't happy, why would he be. So it isn't long before it is unravelling in all sorts of interesting ways. But our Janine is a woman of steely determination, after all you don't rise to her giddy heights without a backbone of titan, and a really big heart. This is what leavens the whole thing and stops it being just another standard plod/police fiction detective novel.
The plot doesn't really matter to a certain extent would just urge yo to give them a try and you won't be disappointed, that will come when you get to the end of the series.
