Amberley Publishing have been producing a number of photographic histories of either past shipping companies or famous twentieth century ships. This is a history of the famous Liverpool based Blue Funnel Line - the 'Blue Flue' or 'Bluies" whose ships were seen the world over particularly in UK and the Far East for over 100yrs. Like so many British shipping lines it was a victim of the container revolution and finally severed its link with the sea in the mid 1990s. This is very sad as the line set high standards and many young men benefited immensely from serving this company which placed a heavy emphasis on training for work and for life generally. As a former Merseysider myself I can emphasize with Ian Collard who was born and still lives in the area. In the 1950s and 1960s, when I grew up in Liverpool, there were always Blue Funnel ships to see on the River Mersey of in the docks - very graceful ships which were well maintained by their crews who took a real pride in them. My contemporaries served on them. This is inevitably not an immensely detailed work but it would certainly be of value to the layman with a general interest in the company. There is company history, not just the routes but also the people, and some technical detail. Ian Collard has published a number of books and I would recommend them all and not just this one.

A very nice piece of work from Ian Collard, I wouldnt rate it as highly as the Ships In Focus work on Blue Funnel, however it's a useful addition to those with an interest in this wonderful company. My family were Welsh seafarers and sailed on several of their ships. It was wonderful to be at the Pier Head and look over the Mersey over to Birkenhead and see several blue funnel ships in dock. Unfortunately I never saw any of their ships in the river. However such books make up for this.
