From a time when jazz was still a 'pop'-ular genre for both music buyers and lovers, these tracks are a fascinating look into the whole musical landscape of American music in the late '50's and 60s. Like every music company, and especially the independent label it was, Blue Note had to make money, and what better way to get the music out there into people's ears than the nation's jukeboxes. It was a time of change - in the social as well the musical sense - and the 21 tracks on 'Blue 45s' highlight just that. Blues, soul, bossa, latin, gospel, rock - all are brought in and mixed with the jazz idioms of the time, and the players include some of the biggest and best names at the time. My only complaint is that this wasn't a 2 disc set!

If you have been groovin' to the Kent label's 60's Mod Jazz CD series, you know that there are some ace tunes to be found on these beautifully compiled CD's. That particular series has been resting on it's laurels since volume 5 in 2005. So if you are in need some new choice 60's Mod Jazz singles then look no further than this rather tasty Blue Note compilation from 1998. Put together by Dean Rutland (hence the Kent Mod Jazz connection), this really is another volume of the Kent Mod Jazz series in disguise.

Now if Dean Rutland & Ady Croasdell could now be let loose with the Verve and Capitol back catalogues, I would be one happy mod jazz purchaser.
