Not Christopher Lee's greatest film (or Jess Franco's for that matter), but I thought this at least looks quite good visually in terms of sets and costumes and has a good musical score - considering the low budget. And yes, this is quite similar in theme to Vincent Prices 'Witch Finder General'.

Contrary to popular belief, this film IS the full version complete with 'naughty bits'. I have the Dutch version also and this is exactly the same.

My main criticism of the film is that much of the 'saucy bits' seem to be at odds with the rest of story and characters. For example, when the heroine is locked in the torture chamber and is about to be taken to 'The Bloody Judge' she decides to linger so that she can lick one of the other naked female prisoners from the knees upwards. This seems rather surreal and inexplicable, its not 'in character' or explained and even the gaoler just stares in bemused disbelief.
Apparently when these parts were added at a later stage Christopher Lee was so incensed that he has refused to watch this film - ever !

This DVD promises an uncut version of Jess Franco's historical romp complete with "copious amounts of nudity". If that is what you are looking for, then don't bother. Remind me to have a word with trading standards will you.....
Anyway, the trading cards and other (dull) extras are replete with scenes not in the movie (as indeed is the back cover). The German version looks to have been a whole deal racier.
It is a standard Christopher Lee baddy film, with him hanging Protestants rather than necking girlies. Cinematography is uneven. Plot is thin. His "redemption" risible.
If you want a far better Jess Franco early '70s film, go and buy Eugenie. This film is a Saturday afternoon matinee job.

By this time (midsevenites) Jess franco was making movies with plots , gone are the lsd inspired early 70's plotless type of flicks, this one instead is a straight story from the past that is similiar to 'witchfinder general'. Blue Underground which always does things right put together this fine film from several existing edits and came out with the best looking and edited version of the film possible. This one is about a sadistic judge who wreaks havoc on the people of his time. the 1600's or some such era. Christopher lee is of course excellent and this one is a must for horror fans. ALthough the horror is from the actions of the judge and not some nonhuman monster. there are extras on this one as well.

1685. This is the time of plot and counter plot, of Witchcraft.

Il trono di fuoco (AKA: The Bloody Judge) is directed by Jesus Franco and written by Anthony Scott Veitch and Peter Welbeck. It stars Christopher Lee, Maria Schell, Leo Genn, Hans Hass Jr., Maria Rohm and Margaret Lee. Music is by Bruno Nicolai and cinematography by Manuel Merino.

Based on the real life Judge Jeffreys, the so called Hanging Judge who presided over what became known as The Bloody Assizes in Winchester 1685.

Spaghetti horror with plenty of blood but nothing else. Christopher Lee was known to say this performance as the cruel Judge Jeffries was one of his best, you have to think he was bluffing by way of trying to be on the same planet as Vincent Price's turn as Matthew Hopkins in Witchfinder General two years earlier. Not that Lee is bad, far from it, he's the reason to watch this, it's just that he is planted in the picture for a number of scenes and everything else is spliced around him in hap-hazard fashion; and that's the uncut version as well!

Ponderously paced and done on the cheap, it also comes off as tacky exploitation, where sex and glimpses of flesh serve for titillation, while exposition rules the day. It's a real hack job, aimlessly directed even. A battle scene stands out, but is at odds with the film, the costuming is smart, the set design equally so, and the colour photography decent. Yet the over riding sense of boredom and amateurism strips the film of any real entertainment factor. Apart from Chris of course, but even then we don't really get a great deal of him! 3/10
