The storyline keeps you hooked, there is always something going on that makes you want to get to the end of the chapter. Yes there are love scenes but very tasteful and fit in with the characters. One of the other reasons I like this book so much was the length of it. It was a satisfying read and the last 20% was not made up of adverts like so many are these days.
The characters are believable and you really do care what happens to them. I can't wait to read more books by this author. I also think this book would make a great film, it is much more entertaining than the Twilight saga.
Alec is the vampire destined to protect Laura in exchange for the gift she bestows upon him. He has protected her mother for the last fifty years so why should this be different?
Bloodgifted is written in the 1st person from Laura and Alec's point of views. This subjective style allows the reader to be a fly on the wall and experience Laura's confusion and devastation when she discovers her true self. Alec is sexy and alpha but glimpsing his innermost thoughts reveals his kindness and unexpected attraction to Laura.
The plot is twisty and every conclusion throws up another question ensuring you keep turning the pages. I loved the apparent ordinariness of the heroine and the existence of a paranormal world operating in secret in mainstream human society.
Bloodgifted shares many qualities of the L. J Smith young adult series Nightworld which I loved. An enthralling mix of history, mystery, paranormal, romance and suspense I can't wait to read the next chapter in the story.
Will I read more by this author? Hell yeah!
Poor editing: The manuscript needs a thorough edit for grammatical and spelling errors/typos - I often found myself re-reading a sentence that didn't make sense due to a word addition or omission.
Inconsistencies in the plot: Due to her unusual heritage (which she only discovers at the age of 50) Laura ages very slowly and appears to be half her age - yet she was able to go travelling abroad in her 'youth' and purchase a house in her thirties. According to the plot, she would have seemed too young to achieve these things on her own...the 'suspicious looks at customs' isn't a satisfactory covering explanation for the reader.
In terms of the story, when Alec is first told he has to be Laura's guardian he is immediately resentful about several aspects of the deal that are forced upon him by Luc - his 'sire' to whom he still owes five more years of servitude - which had me rubbing my hands in glee at the prospect of a feisty relationship between himself and Laura (of course ending in true love) - except the fighting, resentful spirit fizzles out and is replaced by the mundane insta I-will-love-you-for-eternity stuff the second they meet. I felt cheated!
Despite all this, it was an easy read and the story was compelling enough to keep the pages turning. I may read another if the price is right!
NB I've called this a romance for 'grown-ups' as the human(ish) characters are too old for it to count as YA, like many other vampire romances.
