Tendra has lead a rather nomadic lifestyle, constantly on the move with her mother while she was growing up. Plagued by traumatic incidents that only tie together when her part in an ancient prophecy is revealed following her mothers death.
Battling vampire clans, the fate of humanity and an ancient prophecy all play a part in Blood Guard. Full of action, intrigue and suspense alongside the steamy romance, Blood Guard will have you on the edge of your seat.
Athan is vampire royalty, his lifelong duty has been to guard the catalyst to the prophecy, Tendra, whose blood has special properties for the ruling family heir. Athan is a wonderful character, especially when you consider he is a vampire; he is kind and compassionate with a level of empathy lacking in a lot of humans. Athan makes you consider what it is to be human, is it our ability to show compassion that sets us apart?
Although Tendra has been promised to Athan's brother, they are unable to deny the connection they feel, something that goes far beyond the physical and makes you believe in soul-mates. Events unfold making Athan and Tendra question everything they have learnt about the prophecy and also the roles they play in it. It is difficult to discuss the plot without giving spoilers but believe me it will keep you transfixed.
Blood Guard is a fantastic beginning to the Mission series with the foundation for the next story laid out within the plot. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
This was such a wonderful surprise! This is my first m/f and my first fantasy by Megan Erickson and I was completely won over by the brilliant world building and the intriguing characters.
I’m suffering from a touch of vampire fatigue but this is actually an original and engaging premise (though there are a couple of nods to JR Ward’s first BDB book). The idea of a full on parallel fantasy realm is thought provoking and I love that Athan’s vampire world feels more high fantasy than urban fantasy. With clashing vampire races, treacherous internal politics and some GOT worthy powerplays, I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Athan’s Gregorie Vampire kingdom.
I have to admit that I found Tendra a little bit annoying at the start. All the usual UF tropes are used to establish her as a strong and independent woman - but this is overegged a little and she becomes more likeable as we settle into the story. Similarly, Athan’s revelation as a sexy, dangerous and non-human love interest is a little bit cliched and he too becomes more enjoyable as the story takes over. I loved the forbidden attraction between Athan and Tendra. She is his brother’s promised wife and Athan is determined to honour his family. The result is fantastic sexual tension.
The world building slows down the story at the beginning but I loved the action and intrigue once I understood Athan’s world and the power struggle within. I definitely engaged more with the action than the romance but all the elements of the story work well together.
I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series and I’m excited to see these characters and relationships develop further.
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance,Sci-fi and Fantasy
Sounded a great start to a new series. It was OK, though, nothing exciting. I found it hard the way Tendra(Ten) accepted the whole vampires/Sanguinata thing so easily "oh, mum moved us around a lot, we never really had friends, that must have been why..." Plus - she left a note....I'd still have been a bit more shocked, stunned, doubting.
Then the insta-lust that turned to love - well its that sort of book but I still found it a little quick. The sex scenes were a little OTT for me, I love sex in a story if it fits, but this felt a bit put there just to spice things up rather than as an essential part of the story.
It also felt a little bit of a One Plot type of read i.e. Athan and Tendra have to fight to get back to his home and the others, but then there was a turn about at the end that lifted it for me. Overall its was a bit underwhelming though. I did find it hard to believe no one else in the vampires guard or family had picked up what was happening, that something planned for years was hidden so well.
I might give book two a go, maybe there will be more overall story than just a sexy vampire romance read - I hope so but...
Stars: Two and a half to three. Its got potential for me if it picks up a bit but of course it'll be perfect for others as it is.That's reading, very subjective ;-)
