From the Editor

This historical mystery lured me in with its captivating depiction of twelfth-century England, and I was at once intrigued, excited and completely immersed. Inspired by the stories of Rosamund Clifford’s affair with Henry II, The Blood of the Fifth Knight has it all: an incredibly rich and authentic setting, a fantastic set of characters, adventure, intrigue, and a touch of romance for good measure.

When the delightful E.M. Powell and I started working on the publishing of this book, I was stunned to learn how deeply involved she was with historical re-enactments of the period. Her intimate expertise is apparent in every detail of the narrative and even helped craft the cover. Powell demonstrates time and again the passion, research and care she injects into her novels, and that is what makes The Blood of the Fifth Knight truly exceptional.

E.M. Powell is a wonderful storyteller who knows just how to capture the reader’s imagination and who brings an old world to vivid life. I hope that, like me, you will plunge into this book and not want to resurface.

Product description

Review

‘Both Fifth Knight novels are terrific. Theodosia and Benedict are not merely attractive characters; they are intensely real people. The backdrop – both political and social – in which the two are functioning is true to time and place. This is a romp and a fun read.' —Historical Novels Review

I thought it started out a little slow, setting the scene for Henry's torn kingdom, which is the reason for 4 stars, but about a third of the way through it gets going. It really gets going. So much so, I couldn't put it down at times. The only warning I would give is that it is infuriating to read at times. You come to like certain characters and the way the story plays out can leave you frustrated and thinking 'surely not...' but I suppose this just makes it that much more engrossing to read. So give it a chance at the start and although it gets frustrating at times, if you read it to the end you will come away satisfied.

I enjoyed the first book in the series (The Fifth Knight) so was expecting the same quality, alas, this book did not live up to expectations. Whilst the story started off well it soon descended into frivolity. The author seems to have bestowed Superman type powers on the hero, Benedict Palmer, even though poorly armed or near to death he manages to thwart the enemy again and again. Of course, all ends happily for our hero and his family and the bad guys are no more. I had already bought book three (The Lord of Ireland) before starting this book. I only hope that one has more substance.

Really enjoyed this book even though I hadn't read the first one. Love this period of history and felt able to envisage all the action. Will read book one now!

The characters, their emotions and relationships leap from the page.

I am not known for reading historical novels. I'm more of a SF fan, but I enjoyed this! Believable characters. Interesting plot. What more is needed

A good series, Book 1 had pace and drama and Book 2 was every bit as good. Hope Book 3 maintains the same pace and excitement.
