Product description

Review

THE PIRATE DEVLIN is top quality historical fiction. Mark Keating knows his period inside-out and his stylish prose and devilish plot fold it into a gripping read. This is the start of something big. (Harry Sidebottom, author of Warrior of Rome)

A superbly imagined, vividly written debut. Devlin is set to become the Sharpe of the high seas. (Saul David, author of Zulu Hart)

Keating's latest novel continues his insight into the pirate life with technical seafaring detail, bloody sea battles, treasure hunts and exotic settings. High adventure does not get much better than this. (Sunday Canberra Times)

Devlin is an anti-hero to savour . . . fearless and flawed, ruthless and roguish but with all the endearing honour that traditionally flourishes among fictional thieves. (Lancashire Evening Post)

a swashbuckling 18th Century adventure . . . sure to delight both fans of Sharpe and Hornblower (Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

Very well researched (Historical Novels Review)

Book Description

The break-out novel in possibly the best historical series since Sharpe.

Its got Pirates...A fantastic amazingly intricate book full of action adventure...and did i mention Pirates?
As usual Devlin is his charming roguish devilish self. I have to say that before Devlin i had never fund an author who could pull it off. The pirates seemed false, to nice, to OTT etc. But Mark Keating walks the perfect line giving the character a real personality (makes me wonder if some of it is himself...in which case I'd love to meet him)
When he mixes this very rounded real character with the amazingly vivid and well researched historical settings you end up with a mix that's exciting, action packed and will literally grab you by the nuts and drag you from chapter to chapter until exhaustion or the conclusion finishes you off. I personally polished blood diamond in a single day, i just could not put it down.

Very much recommended

Book description:
Each Devlin novel is a standalone adventure. In BLOOD DIAMOND the fearless pirate captain Devlin is invited to London by the Prince of Wales, no less, and offered an amnesty if he will carry out a daring crime. Devlin is tasked with going to Paris to steal the biggest, most valuable diamond ever found - the Pitt Diamond - now in the possession of the French Prince Regent. Set against the unsure frenzy of speculation known as the South Sea Bubble, with action and suspense on the filthy streets and great palaces of London and Paris, not to mention an epic confrontation with the French navy in the English Channel, BLOOD DIAMOND is the most exciting novel yet in the Devlin series.

They say, all the good girls love a sailor, so obviously the bad ones, must love a pirate and to be honest its not just the bad girls, it's the bad guys, so when Mark's latest book landed I ripped the packaging off, grabbed a bottle of rum, so hard tack (OK, I'll be honest it was ice cold Cherry Cola alongside a selection of choccy biscuits) and sat down.

What unfurled within was a story of high adventure, cracking action and of course the continual development of our lead hero as he seeks to grow in his own role. As with the previous instalments Mark continues to grow in his writing skill as each title continues to push him and its clear to see how its gone. The prose is top notch, the pace solid and with a character like Devlin on hand how can you not fall in love with the high seas. Great stuff.

Format: Hardcover
In this the third outing for Devlin Mark Keating really hits his game with another exciting tale of the bold pirate and his band of cut-throats . The streets and people of 1720 London are well described and give the reader an excellent feel of time and place. Purists of the genre may be a bit miffed on this occasion because there is not a great deal in the way of action on the high seas but the story is nevertheless dramatic, exciting and well worth the purchase price.

I marvel at authors who are able to weave historical fact with fiction and Mark Keating is another in a long line of distinguished writers able to do so with aplomb. The Pirate Devlin is a hugely welcome addition to the high seas and my book collection. Highly recommended.
