Review

Covers everything a first time father-to-be will want to know about pregnancy. (Junior Pregnancy & Baby Magazine)

From the Back Cover

That long walk out of the hospital door, into the big bad world with a newborn baby, is about as terrifying as things can get. No escort home to check you're doing everything right? No forms to sign and no fee to be paid? What a strange, strange feeling.

This book is for any bloke who is, or is about to become, a dad. Let's face it, we men are pretty petrified by anything we don't understand. We need manuals: A + B = C. Hence The Bloke's Guide To Babies - no flowery prose or idealistic diatribe; just telling it how it is, raw and unabridged. What's the worst that can happen? What's the best? If the engine is smoking, what should we look at first - the radiator or the alternator? Here is the truth, in bite-size pieces: those first few weeks - getting to grips with nappies, bottles, extreme exhaustion and the whole breastfeeding caboodle

your baby's measurements - from IQ to willy size; are you now a competitive dad?
the truth about babies' birthday parties, fitting car seats, resuming 'biblical relations' with the missus, suddenly becoming a 'babe magnet' ... and so much more!

Jon Smith lives with his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Alia and Ronin. Jon writes books, screenplays and musical theatre.

The Blokes guide books are absolutly fantastic, and a real must for all expectant fathers! The book is written in such a readable non-bulls$%t way, that it cannot fail to make you laugh, cry and think deeply about your forthcoming arrival. Yes it's humours, but it is FULL of useful and CRITICAL info. I read this book prior to attending any anti-natel classes, and found that when we went to the classes, I was actually one of the most knowledgable people in the room (except for the mid-wife!!!) I cannot recommend this book enough, but it, read it, and pass the word on to all your male friends! Lastly good luck with your little one!

Before reading I'd presumed this would be a 'lads' guide to babies - all men behaving badly and using jiffy bags for nappies, but I was suprised how practical and useful this book was. It's full of solid, real world advice. I haven't read anything else by the author but this has a subtle touch - there's humour throughout but never at the expense of the material. Top stuff.

Ok chaps. Your wife or partner's either pregnant or the baby's actually here and you haven't got a clue what to do. Life as you know it may or may not now be over ;-) So, what to do?

Your other half will be reading countless books, manuals, mother and baby & pregnancy magazines and so forth? Is that for you? Probably not and so this is where this book comes in. Do you want to spend your life mulling over the finest details of how to deal with your offspring in prosaic language, repeatedly being told how beautiful everything is? Alternatively, would you like a book that cuts to the chase and tells you how it really is and if there's a fix for it. This is THAT book. Here is where you will find the truth.

What do you *really* need to buy? How can you avoid going bankrupt? Is your sprog measuring up? How can you put a stop to those annoying habits? Should you even try? When can sex resume? What about contraception again? Are second hand clothes acceptable? What do we need by way of cots, cribs, high chairs, push chairs and so forth? All nicely summed up in plan words in a few paragraphs instead of in coma-inducing detail :-)

I bought this book being an expectant father, anyone who buys this book with the thinking it will give you detailed instructions on baby care will be dissapointed, however if you buy it wanting a lighthearted look at fatherhood and all that insues you will find it most enjoyable.
It is written in a lighthearted mild manner, which is just what you will need at that moment in time, beleive me.
All in all, it was enjoyable

Good book, very practical and to the point which you need when you have a child I think. Both my partner and I enjoyed reading it although it was intended for my partner first. The only bit that stressed him out a bit was the money worries and this book help explain them. Good read overall.

I got this for my hubby when we were expecting our second baby, being a typical bloke, he rarely expresses what is bothering him and admits to feeling a bit foolish asking questions. This book was not only informative but got lots of laughs and easy to read wonderful advice and 'what to expect' moments from the authors own real life experiences. One less thing to worry about now, as the other half has a much better understanding and feels a lot more 'clued in' to things this time round. Reading it myself out of curiosity, and I recommend it to all blokes who feel bit left out or slightly clueless. I left it on the coffee table and surely enough, gradually it found it's way onto his bedside table for giggles and 'I see!' moments before sleep! it was an eye opener to me to read from the other side point of view, and made me much more aware of how left out blokes feel....

My husband bought this book after reading the other accompanying books, Tha Blokes Guide to Baby gadgets and the blokes guide to pregnancy. He enjoyed this series as they are written clearly and offer a male perspective true to life with no jargon just previous experience, understanding and advice. I would reccommend Jon Smith books to any dad-to-be, I even found it interesting and entertining!!
