Cloud Control (like The Jezabels) are one of a batch of Oz groups now emerging with some arresting new sounds. They seem to call up the 60s sunshine folk pop groups (ala The Sunshine Company) but with a modern edge. Opening 'Meditation Song #2' shows the clear controlled voice of Alister Wright backed up with Heidi Lenffer with those sunny qualities plus there's also a mid 90s Kula Shaker droning Indian/Aboriginal feeling. 'There's Nothing In The Water We Can't Fight' (also available on 7" vinyl) is one of the best pieces heard this year laden with wonderous harmonies. 'Ghost Story' acts as a fine progression & one wonders if CC have heard that brilliant 1969 LP by Jerry Yester & Judy Henske called 'Farewell Aldebaran'. 4th track 'Gold Canary' has a south sea islands feel & is perhaps the most catchy here. More fine song writing & beautiful harmonies follow via 'This Is What I Said'; acoustic guitar strums summon forth the bright 'Just for Now' (Mamas & Papasesque) with 'The Rolling Stones', 'Hollow Drums', 'My Fear #2', 'Beast of Love' continuing a high on what is a pretty & excellent outing. (Footnote: In fact this review is from the Aussie version which has a slightly different track listing to the UK & USA releases...not on the Aussie release 'Death Cloud' is found at track 3 with 'Ghost Story' etc all moving further back down in the running track order but then unfortunately out goes Aussie track 10 the fine Beach House like 'Beast of Love'.)

I've been burned before, hearing a good song on Radcliffe and Maconie or the Lamacq show thinking, well, it's cheap, if the album's naff it won't matter that much. I bought this after hearing Gold Canary and thinking it sounded very blissed out, laid-back, somewhat psychedelic, but that's track 5, and after listening to just the first couple of tracks on this album I sat up sharply and took notice and even before track 5 came around I was astounded. And then after Gold Canary they hit you with 'This Is What I Said' for good measure.

Look, this album is vital, it's vibrant, it's stunning, I can't keep their melodies out of my head. Ghost Story is probably my standout track but Every Single Track Is Excellent and you should buy this album! They deserve so much more recognition, and hopefully if they come back to the UK soon for another tour they'll get it. This is my album of the year so far, check them out on Youtube if you doubt me. Melodies and harmonies up the wazzoo, really great drumming, lovely songs. They deserve much more success and if they carry on making songs of this calibre it won't take long for them to achieve it. Now if you'll excuse me I have to play it some more :)

I've only just discovered this truly talented Aussie group and I feel like I've wasted the last 2 years of my life not knowing this album was is existence!!

I've also purchased the second album 'Dream Cave' released in the UK Sept 2013..

Get this album and the new one downloaded and treat your ears! You won't be disappointed!
