An awe inspiring read. It truly puts our own personal 'setbacks', however serious we imagine them to be, into perspective. It's impossible to grasp how devastating it must be to lose one's sight at the age of sixteen and then to treated with an almost callous disregard by some people within hospitals and the rehabilitation unit for the blind that Christine attended. This book pulls no punches and let's hope that someone losing their sight nowadays would be treated in a more humane way.
That said, this book is not just a personal diatribe about the awful events in Christine's life. It goes beyond that and describes how, through her indomitable spirit, zest and sheer will power she has achieved many great things.
We can all 'take' something from reading this book, be it - not taking our health, etc. for granted or an in increased awareness that we to can achieve great things. Through it all though is that we have to 'work' to achieve our dreams.
A must read.
Also I live and work in the Gateshead area (tyne and wear), so for me, almost every one of the streets, shops and places she mentions, past and present, I know exactly where and what they were, and brought back memories of my own, I hope part two is out soon, am ready for the next chapter in Christine's very full life.
