This first solo album from the legendary Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer and songwriter was number one in the UK and went Platinum almost immediately after release in APRIL 1989. This album and it's success throughout Europe proved that he was not just a product of the ZTT machine. Produced by , Dan Hartman, Stephan Hague and others.

Curated by Holly Johnson, this excellent new SFE/ Cherry Red reissue contains all the mixes some unreleased in the UK and the whole of HOLLELUJAH! The Remix Album. Included is a DVD of all 5 promo videos made for the project and a booklet containing sleeve notes by Holly about the making of the record.

Disc One
The Blast Album Remastered - 'B-Sides' And Rarities / Atomic City / Heaven's Here / Americanos / Deep In Love / S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Copies of BLAST on the UNI Label come from America where this number one and platinum selling album in the UK did not get the promotion it deserved . American producers Dan "Relight My Fire" Hartman and StEphen Hague gave this a polished electro dance pop feel. Remixes of singles from this album Love Train, Atomic City , Heaven's Here and Americanos included classic mixes by Frankie Knuckles, PWL and Julian Mendohlsen RELEASED LATER IN 1989 ON THE REMIX ALBUM HOLLELUJAH! Americanos was also used as the opening theme tune for the Susan Sidlemann film "COOKIE"

Holly Johnson proved that he was more than just a cog in the ZTT machine with his first solo release for MCA, Blast. Pure pop, with some great synth-disco leanings. This album contains the popular sinlges Americanos and Love Train, plus the big, lush ballad, Heaven's Here.

A review for the 2010 2cd + dvd expanded edition...

Promised by Universal Music in 2009 and finally delivered by Cherry Red records in 2010, the expanded edition of Holly Johnson's first post Frankie Goes To Hollywood album "Blast" is so full of audio content most casual and hardcore fans alike will be very happy indeed.

Firstly to the mastering. The music, for the most part sounds great. All errors from the previous reissue in 2009 have been rectified. The album proper plays through with the appropriate tracks running into each other. Most notable is the cross fade between the first and second tracks which other reviewers who purchased the 2009 release have mentioned was incorrectly mastered as two separate tracks. Not anymore, all good. There is however, two tracks ripped off vinyl records, more on that below. Now on to the contents of the three discs.

Disc one has the remastered original album plus the single b-sides and rarities. Disc two contains all the single remixes including some that were only released in the USA. But the greatest bonus for fans is the inclusion of the tracks from the "Hollelujah" remix album spread throughout the two discs. Disc three is a dvd containing the video album "Blast-The Videos" which is essentially all the promo clips for the album including an extended video of "Atomic City", my favourite track on the album. It's great to finally have these videos on dvd. That's all the good stuff.

There's a small gripe from me regarding two tracks ripped from scratchy vinyl records, in particular "Love Train (ride the a train mix)" track six on disc two. It's only a small complaint from me as I own the cd single for this song and already have this mix.

Having broken away from an unfair contract with ZTT, along with the break-up of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Holly Johnson proved he could make strong waves within the pop scene of the late 1980s. Although Blast doesn't have the same bite and edge as the material of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, each track makes up for a delectable slice of easy-going pop.

There's a nice range of tracks to keep things interesting. Take the funky, energetic opener Atomic City, co-written with the excellent and very underrated Dan Hartman, which is the most FGTH-like piece on Blast. On the other hand pop perfection doesn't come much better than the jolly, bright Love Train, the catchy Americanos, and the lush Heaven's Here. Other songs such as Deep in Love, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Got It Made, Love Will Come and Perfume all have a strong mix of infectious dance-pop. The closing ballad Feel Good is definitely worth a mention - the atmospheric and grand finale. It isn't hard to see why Blast topped the UK chart on release.
