If you want to know what really happened once upon a time. Ask Briar blackwood nearly sixteen, cynicalvand goth, Briar lives a less-than-fairytalelife in the home of her rotten foster mother and snarky foster sisters. With her bitting wit and deadpan demeana, the other kids call her queen of darkness. All the better for keeping everyone at arm's distance, she thought. But now she's screwed up by seriously and inconveniently crushing on the most popular guy at school. And if that isn't sucky enough. Briar finds herself suddenly thrust into a hidden blood thirsty world, filled with dark magic, curses, and poisoned spinning wheels where she learns the deadly truth of her identity and the reason she's never fit in. Can she truly be the fabled sleeping beauty? Or has she finally cracked: And hello! Aren't elves and fairies supposed to be dainty and adorable? If she wanted to deal with drooling, snapping jaws she could have stayed at home. Now she has to rescue the gorgeous guy that may be her one true love, and stop a wicked queen bent on destroying her. Luckily being a bad-ass has it's perks. With an uncontrollable power rising within her, no one knows for sure if Briar has a happily-ever-after future. But if she can handle the mean-girl clique at school, she can damn well go toe-to-toe with ogres, wolves and wicked witches.
I loved this book.
A fairytale with a difference.
Briar i absolutely loved her.
Daz was fab.
Megan and marnie are evil foster sisters.
This is a fairytale with a twist.
i loved it. This is a must read.
A cleverly crafted YA book that provides a peek into the world of adolecents as well as to the concept of Tales within Tales, which I absolutely loved. Briar Blackwood, sixteen and counting, is not your average protagonist. Don't dive into this expecting Happy Ends or predictable structure. If you, or your teen would like an original, slightly sarcastic, slightly dark but always luminous and entertaining read, give this Grimmest of Fairytales a go - you won't be disappointed. Alice in Wonderland meets Edward Scissorhands, with underlying spiritual currents.
What a great idea, fairytales for the older market with a darker spin. This will surely get the reluctant teenage (never mind the adult) reader reading.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that will keep you entertained with a cast of great characters, I even noticed a few other fairytale characters popping in.
Briar is determined and loyal with a lot of spunk who won't leave her friends behind.
I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next instalment of the Grimmest of Fairytales.
