'There is no discipline problem in this school, Mr Dadier !' angrily retorts headmaster, John Hoyt, who presides over 'the garbage-can of the educational system' in answer to the inexperienced and idealistic English teacher, Glenn Ford, just out of the forces. It is a well established fact that no headteacher in any school anywhere will admit to discipline problems in his/her school. Things haven't changed since 1955. This is a marvellous movie whose atmosphere is set right at the beginning with Bill Haley's Comets' 'Rock around the Clock' introducing a collection of unteachable boozed-up juvenile delinquents. The cast is superb. 'They can't all be bad, can they ?' enquires the timorous Ford. 'No ? Why ?' replies the cynical history teacher, Louis Calhern. Emile Meyer blusters vigorously as the loud-mouthed deputy head. Richard Kiley watches on helplessly as his jazz record collection is smashed by a bunch of yobs. The pregnant Anne Francis is worried when she receives anonymous letters about her husband, Ford, having an affair with a teacher whom Ford has rescued from being raped. Above all, the class of illiterate morons, led by the brilliant late Vic Morrow, presents obstacles which would defeat any but the most thick-skinned idealists. Sidney Poitier is immense as the means by which Ford attempts to bring some order to the asylum. The film is intended to bring the issue of juvenile delinquency to a contemporary US audience. But things haven't changed. The only difference is that students today use guns instead of knives.

Blackboard Jungle packs a punch even when viewing now in this day and age, a depressing yet important attack on juvenile delinquents set in the backdrop of an American high school. The violence we witness is harsh and poignant and is given added impact because we know that these problems not only existed back then, but is rife even today with sometimes tragic results.

Glenn Ford does a sterling job of portraying the main teacher of the piece, he is a likable character so when we see him struggle and fight back as best he can, we are firmly on his side. Up against him and firmly railing against the system are an assortment of angry youths with their own personal hang ups, here is the films trump card in Vic Morrow's antagonistic Artie West, a sulking brooding nasty piece of work that is every teachers worst nightmare.

The story is a good one and of course has been done to death many times since this film opened eyes back in 1955, but this is still one of the better spins on the theme, a sort of dirty feel to the black and white filming helps keep it urban, and the sets are well worth a scrutineers once over. 7/10

This is exactly as lots of schools were in the fifties - now they appear to be a lot worse. An excellant film well worth buying.

An excellent film, and a seminal one with its theme of juvenile delinquency, which hadn't been tackled in such depth before. Good all - round performances, particularly from Glenn Ford, and villain Vic Morrow.Paved the way for other films looking at similar social problems.

I love anything that Glenn Ford has done so I am biased, however, this is truly a great film and shows his versatility. The storyline of disrespect and violence in the classrooms is as true today as it was then - 50 years on!
