There are a lot of unfortunate things happen to Briar Chapman but when she finds herself at Lucas Holt mercy and possession she is shocked and scared and her life is never the same
When Lucas Holt sees Briar or his (Blackbird) as he names her he has to have her even though he was told to never buy the first but something in him wants her, his life is never the same
I have to hand it to Molly she writes beautifully and this is no exception and I can't wait to read her next book
"We’re a battle of the brightest day and the darkest night—and I want to lie in the wake of our war."
This was a dark, gritty, dirty and sometimes disturbing book- there is no way around that. The subject matter is not for the faint hearted but if you are a fan of dark reads like I am then you will love this book! Yes it's dark but it is also much more and everything really isn't at it seems especially when it comes to Lucas.
"But I’d been happy with our life and excited for the days to come. Until they didn’t. Until I was forced into a world I’d been blind to and came face to face with the devil. A man cloaked in darkness—a man who would set me free. A man hidden in a world I vowed to destroy with him by my side."
Briar and Lucas were both captivating characters. I truly believed Briar was beyond brave despite knowing she was truly terrified sometimes. She didn't let her fear completely take over and she always remained a bit defiant which was amazing in her circumstances. Lucas is one complicated character. You hate him in the beginning because of what he has done but even from the beginning you know deep down he isn't all evil, that he isn't actually wanting to do what he is doing.
"I had given my heart to a man who had no intention of giving his to me. As much as I wanted to believe that he could, I wasn’t sure he was capable of such things. Because he is darkness. He is the devil … … and I love him. Devastating."
I definitely had very mixed emotions when it came to Lucas and their relationship in general. But that's one of the things I loved about this story, the range of emotions this story stirred in me. The rage, sadness, desperation, heat, passion, confusion....I literally felt everything! There were so many shocking moments, things I didn't see coming. It kept me gripped from start to finish and right up until the end I didn't know where we were going to end up.
Molly McAdams is a new author for me and this definitely won't be the last book I read from her.
It starts off with Briar interacting with her fiance Kyle. She sees a friend who has been hurt and is upset and she asks Briar to cover her work shift. Later on it that shift she gets abducted and is put on an auction block for selling. One of her quirks is when she is scared she sings, and when Lucas Holt hears her sing he bids for her. He takes her home with him and then begins the "lessons" to get her used to him. He calls her his Blackbird and he now owns her.
I loved both of the main characters Briar and Lucas. From the start it felt obvious there was more going on then what we were being told. They were very well written and interesting characters. As the book progressed it became more and more obvious how good these characters were for each other. Their scenes were intense especially in the beginning when she is scared of him and he is trying to teach her.
Briar starts off quite naive. She is sweet and innocent (and in general most men like that).
She sings when she is scared and nervous and doesn't really like for anyone to knowingly hear her sing.
Lucas is a dark man with an even darker past. Without giving anything away he is NOT necessarily a bad man and he does redeem himself.
As said in the book, she is the light and he is the darkness. They are perfect for each other.
This was never dull, there was always something going on and I literally couldn't put it down.
I started it yesterday at 5pm and was awake until 12.30am finishing it.
For me, this is the first time I have ever read a romance that starts out from human trafficking.
And to be honest I thought I was going to hate it. What I didn't realise was this was going to be one of my favourite reads this year so far.
It became easy to forget the human trafficking aspect because Lucas gave Briar so many chances to leave him altogether. Even buying her a plane ticket to her home state. She chose him over and over and it took a while for him to realise he was worthy of her love.
Amazing love story with equally amazing characters. The chemistry between these two was off the charts.
I will stress that all of the love scenes were all consensual though.
I am definitely going to read the next in the series.
