It deftly melds together existing folklore -- the legend of the half-angelic nephelim -- with the modern world, and with a tough, intelligent heroine who has an unusual day job (escorting the souls of the dead to their next destination) and an even more unusual heritage which is about to cause all manner of complications in her until-now isolated and orphaned life.
All the usual plot devices are present and accounted for: weird new uncontrollable powers; cute inhuman sidekick; love triangle of uncommonly gorgeous supernatural geezers; bad guys blasting from all angles, and a big bad ambivalent brooding menace who is as threatening as he is intriguing.
It's all been done before in various forms, but Black Wings combines all the elements with some panache and introduces some clever twists on common themes while keeping a snappy, down to earth feel. The device which angels use to communicate was a very good joke, f'rinstance. And the dialogue is refreshingly crisp and realistic, while swooning is kept to a minimum. Our heroine dresses in black jeans with black boots and doesn't spend all day fussing about her make-up or hair-do. Thank goodness.
Black Wings is less explicit than the Anita Blake books; more mature than most angel tales and less soppy than the average vampire lovefest. It's harder edged than most supernatural stories with a female protagonist. And although this is obviously an opening chapter in an ongoing series, so consists of many hints and not too much explanation, and leaves a lot of plot threads hanging to be picked up next time around, it also contains just enough resolution of the initial plot to be a satisfying read in its own right.
An enjoyable romp; worth buying the next episodes all at once if they're offered in a bundle.
The only perk in her life is her new, jaw-droppingly handsome tenant, Gabriel Angeloscuro. But even he isn't without his secrets, and as Maddy races to discover his intentions, control her new powers, and keep herself from being killed, she begins to realise her life will never be the same again.
Maddy is a fantasic heroine, with a sarcastic sense of humour and irony to spare. She is strong-willed and stubborn (with just enough vulnerability thrown in - to make us readers feel better, I'm sure!) Maddy absolutely makes this novel, although Gabriel may have helped a little bit too! and I am definitely going to be getting the next in the series.
