I've watched Black Sails almost in it's entirety twice now, I didn't view the final season the first time around. You really need to bare in mind the fact that Black Sails was written specifically to be a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and it then becomes all the more enjoyable. There is a mix of both well known fictitious and actual historic characters all cleverly mingled together to carry out their grand plans and dastardly deeds on the high seas or land. There are some obvious blunders as well of the use of items or weaponry that hadn't yet been invented for the era. Just remember Black Sails is ultimately intended to be a fantasy tale, then kick back and enjoy.
You can't help but get completely drawn in and find yourself rooting for the success of the pirates over the might of the British Royal Navy, the Spanish fleet or other adversaries they may be facing. As things progress the storyline isn't constantly predictable and events don't always turn out as the viewer might expect. Great cast in general, some great sets, absolutely beautiful ships of the era and some stunning locations as well.
One major criticism I do have is with the role of "Max" played by Jessica Parker Kennedy. (Surely they could have found an English speaking French actress to play her role as she does an absolutely terrible job indeed). She's literally like a robot just reciting her lines in an awful monotone accent devoid of any life or soul at all. In EVERY scene she appears, she stands or sits stock still with her hands folded in her lap and seems to find it impossible to make any facial expressions to accompany emotion or convey the part of her character. She is concentrating so hard on speaking with a French accent that she is rendered utterly incapable of actually acting. Every time a scene came up with her role it almost became like nails on a chalk board to me as she continually drawled on. I really don't understand how she got the part???
A handful of episodes are a little slow going and struggle to keep you fully engaged in what's going on but for the most part Black Sails is a great series. I won't ruin things by adding any spoilers but you truly don't see what's coming in the final season at all.
