fantastic twoofer of the late idris' classics -grp was a vastly underrated label.

when is "power of love" getting a re release treatment --the much sought " turn this mutha out" has at last been rereleased.

For a few dollars "less, buy Idris' "Legends of Acid Jazz," if it is still available.

I must note the two "original albums" these selections came from were both excellent (I still have them, although somewhat scratched, but still playable). I am exceptionally fond of "I'm a Believer." As far as drummers go, Idris and Harvey Mason (Donald Byrd's Lansanna's Priestess amongst many others) have been two of my favorite drummers of that period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Rhythms & Grooves! 19 Dec. 2015
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com

This is one very impressive and very interesting CD, a 2-for-1 set that includes two studio albums that Idris Muhammad released in 1971. If you are familiar with any of the other albums by Idris, especially the mighty fine "Power of Soul," these two albums are in a similar vein, fusing R&B sounds with Jazz and even some world music rhythms too. Call it soul-jazz or whatever, but this is fascinating music that grows on you with repeated listens, new sonic layers and new grooves revealing themselves each time.

The first album, "Black Rhythm Revolution" is entirely an instrumental affair and includes mellow but mesmerizing covers of Charles Wright's "Express Yourself" and James Brown's "Super Bad," as well as a Jack McDuff tune. that album closes with two Muhammad originals that incorporate a variety of interesting instruments including a ceremonial log from a tribe in New Guinea! The other album, "Peace and Rhythm" mixes it up a bit more, thanks in part to two lovely songs written by Muhammad's wife, Sakinah, who also provides the lead vocals on those tunes. There is also another creative cover tune, this one a version of Wilson Pickett's "Don't Knock My Love."

The CD comes with an insert that duplicated the liner notes by Bob Porter from the "Black Rhythm Revolution" album. Personal from both albums are also listed, but there are no other details or liner notes to give us more background about the "Peace and Rhythm" album. Musicians of note include Melvin Sparks, who plays guitar on both albums, and Ron Carter who plays bass on the second album. This may not qualify as traditional jazz, but I found it to be a well-played and very inspired set of tunes.
