Product description

Product Description

With their lurching sea shanties, debauched murder ballads, messed-up tangos and whiskey-soaked gypsy stomps, some reckon they're from the same stable of stallions as Tom Waits and Nick Cave; others point out the last gang in town swagger of The Clash and the hellbound blues that John Lee Hooker first dragged out of the swamp. Featuring between 7 to 12 musicians playing - guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonicas, saxophone and even empty bottles & tie racks to build their unique Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop N Stroll

The Urban Voodoo Machine - Grand Guignol and Bowery Boy guttersnipery meets rock and roll - where Blues shouter/raconteur/Batman villain (tick as applicable) Paul Ronney-Angel leads his motley crew of troubadours including a fallen priest on bass, the guitarist from Flesh For Lulu, a John Goodman tribute on squeeze box and two drummers - one of whom has been dead for quite some time. Dammit, there's even Jim Jones moonlighting from his Revue! Unquestionably one of the best bands to emerge from the smoke in recent years, the Urban Voodoo Machine release their second album `In Black `N' Red' - and `aint we glad. Its predecessor `Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop'N'Stroll' is what you'd call a stunning debut, but with IBNR the UVM have raised their game like a New Orleans cardsharp with four blessed aces and a blue moon in his eye. With an unholy collision of East European Folk, Mariachi, Vaudeville, Cabaret, Music Hall, Barrel House Jazz and good `ol rock n roll, the UVM are basically doing what Tarantino did with Travolta - a rescue mission from the Colditz of obscurity and a fresh introduction.
There are highlights aplenty: `I'd Rather You Shot Me Down' is a torch-song put through the Spaghetti (Western) ringer, and never has Twain's `rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated' quote been more delightfully rendered in song than in `Cheers For the Tears' - your new Saturday night anthem. (Just stay away from the Johnny Walker and Camden Lock) Whether `Go East' is an army recruitment drive or an invitation to a Russian knees-up is for you to decide and `Alone in the City' could have been an outtake from the banned `directors cut' of Mary Poppins. "Tuppence a bag?" Bargain!

First heard Urban Voodoo Machine on "Loose Ends" (Radio 4 - Saturdays). Immediately Googled the band and found suitable offers on Amazon. Got this; and haven't stopped boogying around the kitchen to it since !! If I were younger it would be my favourite party-livener. But; as I am now 70, I am grateful for the new lease of life. Thankyou "middle-class" Radio 4 - and Amazon, of course !!!!!

Heard these people, improbably, on BBC Radio 4, and was instantly hooked! The leader is, perhaps also improbably, a Norwegian, and there's about a dozen of them altogether. This is not for the faint hearted, of those of a delicate disposition - it's raw, doesn't take itself too seriously, and much of the subject matter is pretty dark really - but somehow it makes you smile! Great driving music. As for the style, well, the nearest I can get is Blues Brothers meets the Pogues, with added deranged gypsy violins. There are nods to bad-ass rock'n'roll, spaghetti westerns, and possibly even the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I suspect their tongues are firmly in their cheeks musically a lot of the time. They sound like they are having a blast, and the use of lots and lots and lots of real instruments, played with gusto, is invigorating. I'm off to buy their other album too!

Very refreshingly strange and original - but hard to categorize. Raw, Earthy, bawdy, bluesy, and was that a bit of klezmer?
Great for driving buy it now!

I've seen them several times live, in fact, I can't wait to see 'em again next Saturday in Leeds. My partner and me have even traveled up to 100 miles before to see them. Their live shows are excellent, an experience, even for people who aren't actual fans and the recordings can't replicate the same atmosphere, but nevertheless still stand up by themselves. The debut album shows their incredible potential and on 'In Black'n'Red' they got it all 'perfected' (sadly, the follow-up didn't quite keep up that high standard). Songs like 'Goodbye to another year', 'Rather you shot me down', 'Go East' and 'Heroin' (check out the brilliant version featuring Wilko Johnson) are instant classics. They had some terrible luck with the death of several members, most recently their guitarist Nick Marsh (Flesh for Lulu). They are great musicians and proper nice guys.

I've seen this band four times now and they've never let me down. They play real instruments including accordion, violin, tuba and two drummers. The lead singer is a great dirty blues shouter and they come across well on cd too. I've given this five stars but I prefer the first one.
